Re: 20 Years of Use Your Illusion (New GW article scans inside)
It's a great read (thanks Russ), but I really think Slash kind of puts his foot in his mouth here.
And here's why, he basically admitted (if you are to believe Alan Niven) that he performed on Axl's UYI epics "for the money". He also let Doug Goldstein run wild, and played the game with Doug, to "keep things going".
Tis true.
It's not a black and white world, and many GNR fans would do well to appreciate this. Axl has his flaws, had his lapses of reason, his poor judgment, whatever. Asking Slash to man up a little and take responsibility for his own actions shouldn't take anything away for anybody else.
But it's better to be the victim and the media darling. Better not to admit he personally contributed to the sour times of both GNR and VR by escaping the band issues to his own drug world. Even a levelheaded person would have a hard time working with someone like that, and when you have Axl & Goldstein on the other end, you'll obviously get the heat.
I respect Slash as a musician and as a GNR member, but I've come to dislike his character all the more as years've went by. The pattern that is emerging is that of a man who sees problems and goes the other way. The latest example is Corey Taylor as opposed to Myles Kennedy.
And before Slashers go for my throat, I'd like to say I am more than aware of Axl being less than a saint, and my point is not to lower one person in order to elevate another.
My point is that while it seems ok (in the media and on the more open-minded GNR communities) to bash Axl for this, that and the other, saying a bad thing about Slash still feels a bit like a taboo.
I'm disillusioned, yeah. Neither VR or GNR is releasing anything soon, and only one of those situations can be attributed to Axl. I'm peeved at Axl because of his non-band, but I'm also peeved at the other person for the same reason.

You are a good writer
And I feel exactly the same, my fondness for Slash the man lessoned after reading his book and he passed the buck for everything that ever went wrong. What made me even more incredulous was how often in the same stories he was telling us how much drugs and alcohol he had consumed at the time, and not once did it ever enter into his consciousness that him being fucked out his mind might have been a factor in his business/personal issues with certain people. Certain drug free people especially.
Re: 20 Years of Use Your Illusion (New GW article scans inside)
tbh after reading it i'm a little disillusioned w/GW
it's enough w/the history lessons & re-used quotes (& niven, jesus christ he's been talking non-stop these past 12/18 months, maybe his gag-order had expired or something but he's defo milking the GnR thing)
i was hoping for an article that examined & extracted the genius of the set. instead that was dismissed in a couple of paragraphs to make room for people slinging dirt @ each other some more.
there are so many great moments in the UYI's they could have filled that entire article & more discussing them. & so many bad moments to, which only adds to the fascination really.
as a chance to admire a landmark hard rock release the article is more than a missed opportunity. it's typical wasteful spiteful fare.
which is obv a truer reflection of the band i guess. & exactly how the RRHoF thing is gonna play out.

Izzy alway maintained that when he came back to fill in for Gilby during the UYI tour he couldn't wait to get out of there because of all of them behaving badly. Slash and Duff were a mess and Axl was remote and controlling.
Reading in his book how Keith Richard managed Mick Jagger would have thought Slash a lesson in being a man and getting things fixed when they slide. Bailing then and bitching now is not the answer.

If anything, it's the name of this thread that hints at an article ABOUT the albums and its music
But the article itself is clearly from the start all about explaining how the original band fell apart while recording UYI.
And one of the more balanced ones I've read.

Re: 20 Years of Use Your Illusion (New GW article scans inside)
yeah i'd love someome to write an article about UYI that was about it's musical influences and what it's influenced and generally about GNR that's not just all about who's fault it is when it rains.
I've said this before but I don't think any of old gnr are saints. Or at least if you read between the lines from everything that's said about all of them.
To me it seems that Axl is the nicest dude imaginable about 99.5% of the time..but in that 0.05% that remains he's massively harsh. And slash is the most easy going affable go with the flow kinda guy about 99.5% of the time - until you walk into his "can't deal with this" 0.05% of the time and then he's just gone for good.
OR at least that's how it seems reading the magazines...
