The first CDs I bought were the UYIs. I held out, because I had a HUGE tape collection. But UYI2 got eaten twice, and I got fed up. I actually bought the CD before I even owned a CD player, with the hopes I could convince my parents to get me one for my birthday.

I'm guessing that must have been summer of '92. That same Discman is what I plugged into my cassette deck in my first car.

I never got a system with a cd player till christmas 94, most of my friends were the same, very few had cd players till the mid 90's. Before that it was either a 2 cassette "ghetto blaster" or a hifi system with tape deck and a turntable on top. I got my first cd in january 95. I love how vinyl keeps hanging on in there 9

My van is a 1997 plate and it has a tape deck, and I'm getting a 2004 plate van shortly and it still has a tape deck!

I was shocked to find out cassettes still made up HALF of all music sales by the early 90's. I thought CD's were really dominating by that point.

Most cars still only had tape players in though at that point so music for your car still had to be cassette.

Yeah, you're right. I actually do remember, whether it be my vehicle, my parents, my friends, etc... that I don't remember CD players being consistently in vehicles new (or old conversions) until the early 2000's.

My parents have a 2003 Chevy TrailBlazer that actually still has a CD/Cassette combo-deck.

I've had CD players in my vehicles, either stock or after-market since the late 90's. But I still have friends who have vehicles with tape decks and USE them.

You think that's late...  It was I think 97 for me.  I evidently always had uncommonly good luck with cassettes.  I only ever had a few break or stretch, even the ones I played the shit out of for 10-ish years.  Plus the tape player I had was really good.

Then to top it off, when I finally broke down and bought a cd player, the cassette player was just thrown into the stereo as an afterthought.  My tapes suddenly sounded as bad as people had been trying to convince me tapes sounded for the last 6 years.

It was the right time though, because it couldn't have been much more than 6 months later that cassettes completely disappeard from record stores.  That is, except for the used racks that were previously mentioned.

I'm still a little pissed that I completely missed "long boxes" I always thought those looked cool.
