I haven't heard anything on the album, but I did see fake Journey live and was quite impressed with Schon live.  I don't think the popular Journey songs do him justice - not sure if it's the mix or what.  I always thought Perry was Journey.  Turns out he was a huge part of it, but not the whole band.

I've been meaning to just download it and give it a taste. I haven't gotten around to buying it yet.

Schon is one of my favorites. Very underrated. As you said, the popular songs don't really show him in his best light. He has been on fire in recent years. Like Slash, he's sober and aging pretty well.

Seen him live twice and he never disappoints.

Finally listened to it...

Here's my quick take review, just jotted stuff down as the songs came at me.

City of Hope
--- Great. Like I said before, sounds like something 80's Queen would do. Great song, chorus sticks in your head.

Edge of the Moment
--- Schon's guitar work here is amazing, but the song itself hurts for the fact that the melody sucks. Pineda sounds fucking awful on this. Sounds like a half-rate European melodic rock vocalist. This song is fucking awful honestly.

Chain of Love
--- Better than cut 2. Schon sounds amazing, so fuckin' sick that solo. Pineda's voice is starting to grade my brain here. A mixed bag.

Tantra
--- Love the piano intro. Pineda sounds MUCH better here. Very good. Nice melody. Pineda sounds downright beautiful here. Love how Schon comes in with that guitar around the 2 minute mark. Pineda's chorus has shades of Perry.

Anything Is Possible
--- Really like this song. Total uplifting melodic greatness. Schon once again is amazing. Pineda hits his marks perfectly. Reminds me of a New Foreigner song.

Resonate
--- Nice song, Schon's on fire. Mid album-type.

She's A Mystery
--- Simpler production versus the rest. Total AOR stuff here. Like the country-esque guitars. Vocals are sweet. Drums are unnecessary. Love the outro, very Dream Theater.

Human Feel
--- Schon's guitar work is amazing. No real hook though to bring you into the song. Just kind of sputters along. Forgettable. Love the message tho.

Ritual
--- Totally forgettable. B-side. Schon's work is once again the highlight.

To Whom It May Concern
--- Weak. Least so far.

Someone
--- Even weaker. Really forgettable.

Venus
--- Okay. Schon's better on the other non-instrumental tracks. Nice option for a closer. Dig it, but not greatness.

Overall on first listen - 4.5/5 - Extremely good album. I think it's arguable it's their best, but i've only listened to classic Journey, and haven't really dug into their catalog all that much. Definitely an album worthy of recognition and appreciation, that it probably won't get. Best melodic album i've heard so far in 2011.

Good assessment. Fair. It debuted at No. 17, btw. Sold 17K. Last album debuted selling around 100K. Guess the novelty wore off.

Axlin, BEST Journey album? You have a discography to dive into. 16 Download all those mid 70s-mid 80s albums.  They're mainly known by pop culture for Escape but there are gems throughout their discography.

Gotta take into account that last album had so much bonus content(GH, DVD) that was a huge selling point.

Yeah, the last one clearly was fueled by the GH rerecording and the DVD. Still, like our own GNR, this CD had little to no promotion, even with Wal-Mart. I'm amazed.

Yeah i'm kinda shocked too. Wal-Mart did not roll out the red carpet like they did for even Foreigner. Foreigner's press for Can't Slow Down was more so than Journey's Eclipse, and honestly - that album had virtually no promo.

I think WM really knows what can sell, and they stick with that. If it's AC/DC, or Garth or The Eagles, they'll bite, but Foreigner & Journey... not gonna happen.

I think WM would've probably went hog wild with Chinese and that GN'R name tho. Hell I still see GN'R Greatest Hits on their rollback national commercials and flyers still. Obviously remains a big seller there.

Oh yeah and James i'll dig into Journey's stuff a bit more when I get the chance. If just for Schon alone.

Went to see Journey last night in Hartford with Foreigner and Night Ranger.  Great show.  Thought all 3 bands were really good.  Though I'm far from the toughest critic.  I don't think I've ever been to a "bad" show.

The guys from Night Ranger were on with Eddie Trunk earlier this week and they played a couple songs off their new CD.  I had heard one before, but the newest one they played and opened their set with, dare I say, ROCKS!

"Growing Up In California" is pretty catchy as well.

I prefer Foreigner today, to the classic Foreigner.
