Re: Charlie Sheen to return to TV in new sitcom
Charlie Sheen to Return to TV With Syndicated Sitcom 'Anger Management'
by John Sellers / The Wrap-Yahoo! TV
Charlie Sheen is set to return to television in a sitcom loosely based on the 2003 Jack Nicholson/Adam Sandler comedy "Anger Management," Lionsgate Television announced Monday.
TheWrap confirmed two weeks ago that the wheels had been set in motion on the project, which Revolution Studios honcho Joe Roth was shopping.
But now it's official: Lionsgate will produce the half-hour comedy and will distribute through its subsidiary Debmar-Mercury. Sheen will have a "significant ownership stake" in the project, the production company said.
"I chose 'Anger Management' because, while it might be a big stretch for me to play a guy with serious anger management issues, I think it is a great concept," Sheen said in a statement. "It also provides me with real ownership in the series, a certain amount of creative control and the chance to be back in business with one of my favorite movie producers of all time, Joe Roth."
Roth has produced five Sheen movies, including "Major League" and "Young Guns."
Speculation about the project began when Sheen offered a not-so-subtle hint to TMZ that he was prepping a show based on a Roth-produced film with the initials "A.M."
"Anger Management" will be Sheen's first full-time TV gig since CBS fired him in March from his mega-successful "Two and a Half Men" after a series of outlandish media interviews in which he bashed showrunner Chuck Lorre and bragged about past drug use.
Sheen will be the subject of a Comedy Central roast, which will air Monday, September 19, the same night that "Two and a Half Men" returns to the air.
Sheen will play a variation on Jack Nicholson's character in "Anger Management." No word yet on whether the Sandler character will be involved in the adaptation or who the writing team will be.
Here's a truncated dupe of the release sent out Monday by Lionsgate:
Los Angeles, CA, July 18, 2011 — Former Two and a Half Men star Charlie Sheen is planning his return to series television in Anger Management, a new sitcom loosely based on Revolution Studios' 2003 hit comedy feature of the same name. Lionsgate-owned Debmar-Mercury, headed by Co-Presidents Mort Marcus and Ira Bernstein, will distribute the series that will be produced by Lionsgate Television, led by Television Group President Kevin Beggs and COO Sandra Stern; Joe Roth and Revolution Studios' Vince Totino; Sheen manager Mark Burg's production company, Evolution Management; and Robert Maron.
Sheen will retain a significant ownership stake in the series inspired by the film, in which a mild-mannered, non-confrontational man is ordered to attend group anger management sessions led by a therapist who could probably use some anger management himself.
"I chose Anger Management because, while it might be a big stretch for me to play a guy with serious anger management issues, I think it is a great concept," Sheen said. "It also provides me with real ownership in the series, a certain amount of creative control and the chance to be back in business with one of my favorite movie producers of all time, Joe Roth."
"Who better than Charlie Sheen to tackle Anger Management," Roth said. "With Charlie's incredible talent and comedic gifts, he remains the leading man of TV sitcoms. I'm excited to collaborate with him once again."
Roth is also currently working with Lionsgate's Debmar-Mercury and Ice Cube's CubeVision on the TBS hit "Are We There Yet?" It is one of three hugely successful sitcoms (along with Tyler Perry's "House of Payne" and "Meet the Browns") that are the result of a unique sitcom business model created by Marcus and Bernstein.
Marcus and Bernstein said in a joint statement, "Our sitcom model is all about building well-known brands around extraordinary talents like Charlie that, thanks to their large profit participation, are highly motivated to succeed.
It's not every day you can roll out a sitcom featuring the star of the biggest TV comedy of the past decade.
"We always look for series ideas that are noisy, accessible and relevant," said Lionsgate's Kevin Beggs. "Charlie Sheen in 'Anger Management' takes those criteria to a whole new level and we are thrilled to be in business with him, Evolution, Debmar-Mercury and Revolution Studios on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. With a star of Charlie's magnitude, a producer as venerable as Joe Roth and a branded property as compelling as 'Anger Management,' this show has unique upside while still adhering to our disciplined business model."
Said Burg, one of the creative forces behind Lionsgate's "SAW" franchise, the most popular long-running horror franchise of all time, and a former executive producer of "Two and a Half Men," "We have been fielding numerous offers for Charlie since his departure from "Two and a Half Men," but none were as creatively and financially compelling as the package that Lionsgate, Debmar-Mercury, and Revolution presented us with Anger Management."
The deal was negotiated on behalf of Debmar-Mercury and Lionsgate by Sandra Stern. Sheen was represented by Jake Bloom and Leigh Brecheen of Bloom, Hergott, Diemer, Rosenthal, Laviolette & Feldman. Revolution and Joe Roth were represented by Matt Johnson of Ziffren Brittenham LLP.
Re: Charlie Sheen to return to TV in new sitcom
The world was anxiously awaiting "Anger Management: The TV Series"
Considering the mega-amount of money Two and a Half Men makes in syndication, this might be a BIG money maker for Sheen and Debmar Studios.
But talk about a trade down. Sheen basically just went from "Who's The Boss" to "Charles In Charge" in terms of acting-caliber.
I'd bet BIG money that Rob Schiender ends up playing Sandler's role, with Sheen as Nicholson.
I'll still check it out for shits n' giggles.

Just one guy's take on the matter.

Charlie Sheen has a new TV show (not really, btw)
Hollywood is apparently under the impression that ‘Anger Management’, Adam Sandlers 6th most popular movie that was released 8 years ago, has been begging to be turned into a TV show. And so that’s what they’re gonna do, and as Charlie Sheens can’t-miss comeback project no less!
Entertainment Tonight declares…
“It’s official. Charlie Sheen is returning to sitcom TV.”
Except that he’s not. All he’s doing is filming a pilot. There’s no network set to air it yet. That part is generally considered to be pretty important.
Loosely based on the 2003 comedy starring Adam Sandler and Jack Nicholson, the new show would find Sheen in the Nicholson role as an anger management counselor who seems to have a few anger issues of his own.
The project reunites the former “Two and a Half Men” star with producer Joe Roth, who worked with him on such films as ‘Major League,’ ‘Young Guns’ and ‘Three Musketeers.’
Oh, well if Joe Roth is producing it, it’s bound to be good.
“I chose ‘Anger Management’ because, while it might be a big stretch for me to play a guy with serious anger management issues, I think it is a great concept,” Sheen says. “It also provides me with real ownership in the series, a certain amount of creative control and the chance to be back in business with one of my favorite movie producers of all time, Joe Roth.”
First of all, casting Sheen in the Nicholson role, where he has to do lots of yelling, is a dumb idea. It’s the opposite of every comedy Sheen has ever done. Second of all, this is just a pilot. The 4 major networks ordered 39 sitcom pilots last year. Only 9 of those ever actually made it on the air (*). At best this will end up on second-tier basic cable, on some channel that needs attention. No real network is gonna trust Charlie Sheen with a TV show. I wouldn’t even trust Charlie Sheen to have the fucking remote.
(the 9 shows were: Mike and Molly, Shit My Dad Says, Perfect Couples, Outsourced, Happy Endings, Mr. Sunshine, Better With You, Traffic Light, and Bob’s Burgers. 6 of those 9 were cancelled after one season or less. Mr. Sunshine, starring Matthew Perry, was cancelled after 9 episodes. Only Mike and Molly, Happy Endings, and Bob’s Burgers will be back for a second season. Even Larry Charles couldn’t get a show on the air. Who would you trust more with your TV show, Larry Fucking Charles or Charlie Sheen?)
Re: Charlie Sheen to return to TV in new sitcom
I think that guy above is over shooting this thing. It's going to be a SYNDICATED sitcom.
Not that stuff like Charles In Charge & Mama's Family weren't hilarious at times, but that's basically what Sheen's doing now, or going to be doing.
Of course it's gonna be stupid. ANY show that is in first-run syndication is usually there because most of the major networks, broadcast or cable, aren't willing to take a chance on it.
Some of my favorite shows ever were syndicated their whole run, or partially. So it's not a dig at syndicated series.
But let's be honest... I highly doubt Sheen is gonna be getting Emmy nod's on a syndicated TV series.
Sheen's show is gonna be produced by the same studio responsible for House of Payne, and Meet The Browns: The Series.
At this point, it's Sheen's best chance for a regular gig, after his substance abuse troubles. I'd go so far to say it's his final chance. If he fucks up this mega-deal in syndication with a new show, he's finished. He'll reach "un-insurable" territory like Corey Haim, Lindsay Lohan, Jan-Michael Vincent... all did.
Re: Charlie Sheen to return to TV in new sitcom
I think the guy's point was that Sheen, and others, are claiming "victory" here. In all fairness he is still "LOSING"! He was on one of the most popular sitcoms on TV and being paid handsomely at that. He is not there with this latest move. Not even close. Yet if you read his tweets, you'd think he's standing on top of the world. Maybe he'll get there someday, but he's still a long ways off.
Re: Charlie Sheen to return to TV in new sitcom
Agreed. WINNING... that ship has sailed. Even guys who where the shirts look either 500 pounds or cracked out.
The only way he'd be WINNING, is if someone like TBS picked the series up, and aired it Monday nights at 9pm in direct-competion to CBS' re-tooled Two and a Half Men, and actually split their audience.
But the last time I checked, Conan wasn't really making much of a dent Leno or Letterman's ratings trying to direct-compete on TBS.
Re: Charlie Sheen to return to TV in new sitcom
Yeah I was going to bring up the Conan comparison, but obviously he didn't self implode like Charlie did. But yeah, while Conan may be happy and at peace now. I wouldn't say he's doing better career wise than when he was host of The Tonight Show. But at least he'd have some reason to beat his own drum, since he was forced out of his show and not the other way around, like Sheen.
