Re: Azoff-Axl Lawsuit Settled: Includes "comprehensive touring agreement"
interesting interview with Morrissey at Billboard. He seems to have some of the same management/label issues that Axl has. Morrissey was also under Merck at Sanctuary when Axl was as well.
It is becoming more and more known that you do not have a record deal -- but you do have a new album ready to be recorded. Has there been any contact from labels since you've started discussing this publicly?
None. Universal say they are interested, but their communications have gaps of eight weeks, so they obviously aren't that serious.
How, exactly, did you end up without a label? What happened with Universal?
Universal and my then manager [Irving Azoff] decided to release my last album ["Years of Refusal"] during Brit Awards weeks, an unwinnable situation for someone like me who is the exact opposite of Brit Awards wretchedness.
So, I suffered badly against the usual sandblast of Brit Awards publicity, and my relationship with Universal and my management collapsed due to their bad judgment. Everything matters.
What would be the best case scenario for you, right now, with this record? Do you have a certain label in mind? Indie, major?
I am independent by nature. I am an independent artist even when I am on a major label. The word "indie" is meaningless now. It's so over-used that people think it simply means green hair.

In a way, they are fairly similar...both are sort of whiny, both have very loyal fanbases and both have broken up two iconic bands which the public constantly clamors for "reunion". Axl seems to be very independent by nature as well. Guys like them will always have issues with labels, managers, etc. What makes them both great, also makes them very difficult to deal with.

i don't think morrissey's great. don't like him or the smiths. at all.
but they have other similarities especially being annoying assholes
& the lack of label support is a drag, but also just another excuse when it comes down to it.. no? plenty of people can play the game, be happy & release cracking music & have to deal with asshole record labels..

Good read. I'm sure he'll find a label. Like a lot of artists they prbably don't know what to do with him, or how to market him now.

Axl is 'independent' in the way he doesn't want anyone else on the world a say in what he's doing and what not. But he's not independent at all when it comes to money. He likes to spend others' millions and he likes to spend a lot. He wants the label fund anything he wants at the moment, be it the 457th producer, the 52343rd guitarist or the 9394343993rd rerecording. Not an indepentent artist if you ask me.
Re: Azoff-Axl Lawsuit Settled: Includes "comprehensive touring agreement"
To this day Morrissey refuses to reunite his old band, going as far as to say that he would "rather eat [his] own testicles than re-form The Smiths, and that's saying something for a vegetarian." In March 2006, Morrissey revealed that The Smiths had been offered $5 million to reunite for a performance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, which he turned down, saying, "No, because money doesn't come into it." He further explained, "It was a fantastic journey. And then it ended. I didn't feel we should have ended. I wanted to continue. [Marr] wanted to end it. And that was that." When asked why he would not reform with The Smiths, Morrissey responded "I feel as if I've worked very hard since the demise of The Smiths and the others haven't, so why hand them attention that they haven't earned? We are not friends, we don't see each other. Why on earth would we be on a stage together?"
sound familiar?
Re: Azoff-Axl Lawsuit Settled: Includes "comprehensive touring agreement"
Axl very much reminds me of certain people i've known who basically don't feel they owe you loyalty, but if you don't give them absolute loyalty in return your some sort of traitor, or a fake friend or not a real fan, etc.
