Re: Azoff-Axl Lawsuit Settled: Includes "comprehensive touring agreement"
axl's admiration of jagger's organisation never sat quite right with me
it was like axl forgot about all the CRAP records the stones put out after jagger seized control/keef slipped deep into his addictions
with axl taking on all the power there was an automatic compromise between in the quality (& quantity) of material & the bizness stuff he had to wade through.
The other difference was that Charlie Watts was there to beat the shit out of Mick when he stepped out of line too.
I think that's a big reason Axl targeted both Steven & Matt the way he did. Ironically GNR's drummers were also the only guys that would stand up to Axl.
Slash and others have said that Steven (pre-crack) was considered the good lookin' one, and was very social and very likeable, and Axl seemed to resent it, almost as if he was jealous. Steven also would come in and bust Axl's balls on a regular basis and just make Axl look like a stooge, and it drove Axl up the wall.
Of course then there's Matt. Matt wasn't even in the band barely a year and had already had several confrontations, some verbal, some physical and even told Slash how they needed to stand up to him, and Slash would always back down.
In Axl's defense, all of these guys who supposedly hated him, broke their neck later to kiss his ass.
But if you were to believe Slash & Matt's stories, Axl was a total bully to the band.

Yeah, that's fucking awesome.
And it doesnt mention Chinese Democracy directly or indirectly (font, Chinese GN'R logo) anywhere.
Is it too much to hope that they're gearing up for that self-titled album release?

I wouldn't be surprised if it was the start of something in the longer term though. Like how the 2008 release kinda started with the 2006/7 tour....and those NYC shows.
I sort of feel they must be working on something in the background, either music or negotiations for a usa tour or something. But maybe i'm delusional.

A USA tour - yes. A new album? No.
At this point, nothing leads me to believe that'll happen. You'll probably see a reunion before you see another album. Believe it or not, that really fucking bothers me. I'd rather have the new songs.

I'm not so sure.
We know that Axl has at least a basic framework of a follow up album around. Both DJ and Baz and others have refered to at least a second CD worth of partial matrial - and in some cases more. Even if there are gaps in that material - we also know DJ and Ron at least are chomping at the bit to write new material - and that DJ sends ideas Axl's way.
So material wise...there's no problem.
The problem with an album release is:
1. Does Axl desire it? As obviously he doesn't do stuff he doesn't want to.
2. Are there business issues. What is the state of the GNR contract? Can they agree on terms. Last time Axl didn't like the lack of marketing, and I'm guessing the label probably wasn't thrilled at his lack of promo. Everyone made good with best buy. But this time around they'd need to work out another deal that everyone is going to like. I'm sure the label will be into it to an extent as there's a basic level of peformance any GNR album would do, and GNR releasing stuff makes them more than GNR doing nothing at all - but the question is will their terms be acceptable to Axl and co. Can something be worked out.
Then there's the reunion
Basic framework exists in that all 5 guys are still alive.
But then there's the same two problems:
1. Do they want to do it? Axl has said never till death. Slash says only if Axl behaves in a way that is inconsistant with Axl's entire peformance history. Those two points alone make it seem nearly impossible. Then there's broader issues. People make a deal out of Izzy playing with them - but remember Axl's comments - that Izzy came back in a way where they didnt have to rely on him showing up or being in any way reliable. There's deep seated unwillingness and trust issues for a lot of these guys to work together long term it seems.
2. Business terms. even if they made friends. What would happen? Would they all come back as temporary contractors? Would the name rights be restored? Would Axl want greater control of publishing? Could they agree on who cops the blame if shows are delayed or cancelled. Can't see Axl surrendering everything he's worked to gain, but even if he doesn't - by engaging them all as temporary apperances even then all he'd do is solidify the old GNR reputation issues that have plagued the new band. Good luck being ashba next gig if the last gig was the slash reunion one-off special. He'd get twice as much abuse as usual. Then there's the other guys...if they give into Axl's terms - what's in it for them - huge payday - but it's not like they're broke. There would be the fun of playing with that chemistry again - but then that fun usually came with a LOT of drama. There's also NO sign that the drama would end...as late starts still happen. No sign it wouldn't revert to a 1993 experience for them instantly. Not to mention for those with substance problems replicating an old situation would probably be tempting and stressful. Lot of issues here.
So that's the thing...both of them require some serious negotiations to happen. In my opinion from the availiable public evidence, it seems that more of the groundwork is there for Album 2 than for Reunion. It seems the easier mess to sort out.
