Sorry, couldn't find our DT thread.
This is more of the DT I know and love. The last CD seemed too nu-metally for me.
At any rate, if this is any indication, they will not miss Portnoy at all.
My only complaint: Mangini's drumming is awesome, but it's lower in the mix than Portnoy used to be. Show him off already.
Myung's bass is very clear here too, much moreso than in the past. Great song, great production.

It's nice to see them go back to a pacing and sound similar to Awake-era DT, but that track is VERY uninspired, tired, and lacks a real melody which has plagued DT in the last couple of albums.
Where's the song? Maybe it's just the fact that after nearly 20 years, you can't compare your current catalog to your first few albums or what not, but the track just kind of blends into the rest.
I LOVE Dream Theater, and they are one of my Top-5 music artists ever, but they have very much become the AC/DC of prog metal.
As for the technical aspects, they're all there. LaBrie's voice is vintage, Petrucci's guitar is great as always, and Mangini seems to totally replace Portnoy.
Not a bad track, just a forgettable one. I think LaBrie's last solo album (which was fucking awesome) proved that maybe DT need to consider going back to shorter songs, and just doing little 3-5 minute hits, rather than 8 minutes being their shortest songs. The songs seem tired, and DT feel like they are bound to have to make them that way.
I think shorter songs would give them more of a chance to isolate individual riffs and keyboard melodies, and make catchier, better songs, but shorter in range.
We get it. Your technically amazing. We got it 20 years ago with Learning To Live. I think now it might be time to settle into a groove, and not do 8 minute songs (or in Black Clouds case - 16 minutes) everytime out. I'm getting bored with it, and I LOVE the guys.
