Re: SLASH: Next Solo Album To Arrive In March/April
Izzy was cool and all...but you can't tell me that when I saw Axl, Slash, Duff and Gilby in 1993 that I didn't see GNR. Slash playing that november rain solo with all of his feel...Axl's piercing vocals..Duff drunk as fuck hamering on his bass.....hey I love izzy and all but the UYI band at least was still GNR imo.
without getting into the whole "is modern GNR still GNR debate" i think the key parts of the old GNR sound are Axl and Slash - despite who writes what or whatever - what you notice on a track you listen to are Axl + Slash's unique sounds.
I love all 5 of the old band and they all brought something that's for sure....but just loosing izzy isn't the death of the entire thing to me.
And I'm sure plenty of other people would agree with that. For me personally, 3 of my top 5 GN'R tracks are Izzy songs (Don't Cry, Patience, Brownstone). The other members certainly made those songs much better than they would have been as Izzy solo tracks, but the fact remains that he was the primary songwriter on all three of them. Setting aside my own bias for a second, look at the output of the band after he quit. They were fucked. It was over. All they managed without him was a covers album for crying out loud. He was the glue that held the thing together.

I agree with the both of you. YES, it died after Izzy left... and you know when that was? July 17th, 1993.
It's "death clock" started as soon as Izzy left. 1992/93 Guns were still VERY MUCH Guns N' Roses.
But after that... nah. And it's not because I don't fill Axl can re-cast the thing, but it's that I don't feel Axl put himself and his "vision" over enough. He killed all of his own credibility... further re-inforcing the thought that the REAL Guns N' Roses was 1985-1993.

Izzy left in 1991. He played a few shows as a contract player in 1993, but he was not part of the band's writing process at that point. The 1992/1993 touring act was a shell of the real GN'R and a zombie band that was already dead but didn't know it until they got back from the tour. Without Izzy's writing contributions, they realized they were fucked as a studio band.

They were dead as a creative band long before Izzy left. It was one of the reasons why he quit. Post 1988 it was a telephone band only. They tried to get their shit together, Slash, Duff and Steven, but the others weren't interested. That's why UYI is more of a solo album collection, than a real band album.

Nov 91 was the end of the real Gnr to me......everything after that turned in to Axl's Orchestra.
Plus, Axl's bond with Izzy was always the tightest out of the original 5 band members. Once that bond was broken, the band was broken.

But that doesn't really matter does it? After UYI's release, and especially after Izzy left, they were done as a creative studio band anyways. They were a touring act by 1992, and were just winding down their UYI tour, ending in 1993 and that was it. Almost like finishing their business before walking away. Matt & Gilby both said looking back that they didn't want to believe it, but by the end of that tour, "everyone kind of knew it was over".
My point is was "there was no writing process" by 1993. So I don't really understand what that's got to do with the quality of the shows, and the band finishing their tour with Gilby. (who seemed to fit right in, far more than Paul or Richard)

The shows were great. Axl's current band puts on a great show too. But that doesn't mean either of them are Guns N' Roses. For me, there are 4 key ingredients in the band. Take one away and it's not the same band anymore. It's a tribute touring band.

Well 75% of that key formula, is still the majority - so they are Guns N' Roses.
Velvet Revolver almost had Izzy, Slash, and Duff together. If it actually played out like that, would you have considered it GN'R?

The answer is Axl N' Slash. That made them sound almost Guns N' Roses live.
