Re: New Soundgarden Album By the End of the Year?

According to this article, Soundgarden’s new album will be out by the end of the year like many fans have assumed. The writer of this article doesn’t clarify though if Cornell himself told him the information. This is from Scott Kara’s new interview with Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell on NZherald.

“It’s been really … I guess I want to use the word fulfilling, which is weird,” he laughs of recording the new album, although he’s not saying too much about it, since it’s not out until later in the year.

And at the opposite extreme, he’s also loving playing solo – just him and his guitar – on his acoustic Songbook tour, which he brings to New Zealand in October.

During the shows he sings songs from throughout his career, including those of Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog (his early-90s band with members of Pearl Jam), Audioslave, songs from his three solo albums and a handful of covers, including songs by John Lennon, Led Zeppelin, and, um, Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean (off 2007′s solo album Carry On).

The first show in Auckland, on October 4 at the 2000-capacity ASB Theatre, sold out in 40 minutes with a second being added, and there is also a date in Wellington.

“To be working between the two worlds, with the tour being so stripped-down, and to have that sandwiched between recording Soundgarden material, which is about aggression, adrenalin, and rhythmic chaos, it’s great,” he says.

This is encouraging. Not changing direction. I was wondering if we might start getting ballads since they have aged and a ballad would help push the album. I'm hoping for new songs to be a natural progression from Down on the Upside and if any B sides have been rerecorded, they get the Black Rain treatment where only some parts have been added. Those demos were almost perfect as is.

Soundgarden covers November Rain

That would be worth the price of admission. 14

Seriously tho, i'm curious as to what SG ballads would sound like. More GN'R or more AIC.

I think they'd sound like less of both and more Soundgarden.  5

Some recent comments from Kim....

STEREOGUM: So what is the status of things?

KIM THAYIL: We’re recording. We’re kind of doing it in stages. We have about 14 songs in various stages of completion. Previously, we’d just block out a bunch of time and go and track everything at once, but we can’t really do that right now. Matt has commitments to Pearl Jam, Chris has a solo tour happening and Soundgarden is touring in July. So we do the studio thing around those other engagements, which actually is turning out to be a lot better for us. It takes the pressure off in some ways. It’s not like, OK you’ve got three weeks and everything needs to get done in those three weeks. We can work at our own pace right night and take things one step at a time. We’re really enjoying it. We don’t have a record company or management pressuring us to hurry up, so we can really savor the process this time.

STEREOGUM: I realize it’s very early on in the process, but what can you say about the new songs?

KIM THAYIL: The vibe of the songs is definitely very heavy. We’ve always tried to explore how to make this really heavy, aggressive music without sounding like a bunch of knuckle-dragging meatheads. I think these songs are kind of exploring that idea. Ways of emoting aggression and anger and hostility in ways that feel new. You know, we never were really chipper guys. We were never the party band, or even a particularly social band. We were always really just hard workers and a kind of musician’s band. That’s what we wanted to be that. We wanted to play for an audience that reminded us of ourselves back when we were young, I always liked the idea that our fans were that guy or girl who collected records and wanted to start a band of their own and play good music. I always imagined we were the band that made the party end. Like, ok guys it’s time to leave now, someone just put on Superunknown! I always felt like we made music that was good for driving, good for listening to really loud. Wait, does that answer your question at all? The new songs sound really heavy. I’ll just say that.

STEREOGUM: So what happens next for you?

KIM THAYIL: Touring next month, finishing our record sooner rather than later. You know, it just feels good to be doing this stuff. I like the idea that we’ve all come back together to tie up the loose ends and sort of attend to our legacy, such as it is. We want to see that our back catalog is treated with care, that our fans aren’t ripped off, and we want to make really vital, creative, excellent new music together. Also, as the sort of unofficial custodian of the Soundgarden archives, I want to make sure that our unreleased material is handled in the right way. It really bums me out to think about all the material that never got released by Nirvana.

From Guitar Player....

There are some things that sound similar in a sense to Down on the Upside, so it's kind of like picking up where we left off. There are some heavy moments, and there are some fast songs. Guitar players might recognize some of the tunings, but not dropped‐D. Frankly, it seems very pedestrian now, and it bores me. I don't want to make that power chord with my one finger on the fifth and sixth strings anymore. I've become very comfortable with C, G, D, G, G, E [low to high]. That's a progression from the open‐C‐based tunings we developed on Superunknown and modified on Down on the Upside.

There is also some material going in new directions, and there are some slightly different elements. I don't know how to address that specifically. I will say that Chris tracked a mandolin part last night. Rest assured though, it was more in a Zeppelin way than a Renaissance way. After that, I grabbed the mandolin and we all had fun jamming acoustically. It will be interesting to see where we wind up.

Things are really happening. 9 I was worried there for awhile but they are clearly getting ready to put this thing on the launch pad.

Definitely sounds like this is going in the direction of Down on the Upside.

More updates....

93X reports Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron said he and his pals in Soundgarden are nearly done recording their new album, saying that the album is about 80 percent finished.

"We're going to record a couple of more songs in August when we get back from tour and then hopefully we can mix it up and put it out," he said, according to UltimateClassicRock.com.

During a radio interview in London, Cornell said they might play new songs during the tour although they will be concentrating on the old material. Also said early 2012 for the album.

I assumed that, but I didn't know if they'd go a different direction. Cornell has gotten alot more softer since SG & Temple.

I didn't know if they'd start doing crazy shit like pianos & symphony n' shit. I figured, "hey it's SG, no way", but then I thought how they like to do what everyone expects them not to do.

But you're probably right.
