Dangerous words around a litigation burned man like Axl. If I was Axl I'd fucking flip reading this. DJ basically says that Axl joined in on the assault, no self defence clause to be entered here.
That fat dumb ass punchbag could well be employing some ambulance chasing sleaze lawyer to hit Ax up for some $$$$$. DJ's article sets it up nicely.
I never liked this guy much (it started with my illogical dislike of his sly eyes!!!) but now it has escalated to utter distain.
Axl needs to have band members that don't fawn and scrape in public like this. Are Tommy & Bumble the only ones with a pair in that lineup?
In DJ's defense, the antics he speaks of are the same ones that gave GN'R the legend and myth they had like a gang back in the day.
So if Axl's pussin' out to litagation, not only should he not of joined the "fight", but he's not W. Axl Rose anymore.

First off, the security was pretty lax. There was no-one around to escort the big, drunk partybasher outside. Just Del and some others, apparently. Wonder if Axl still has bodyguards, as this would've never happened on Earl Gabiddon's watch. Anyway, the gloves came off on the unlucky tour manager. DJ, at least, noticed.
DJ, a wireframe he is, grabbed the big bully by the throat and slammed him against the wall. The big bully was apparently intimidated by those weird eyes, as I get the impression DJ was no match for him physically. He even allowed DJ to walk him all the way to the door before landing a punch.
Axl saw the punch and jumped in. Fine. Too bad he didn't see the tour manager being punched. Strange he missed it.
(In other words, I believe Axl (& possibly DJ) engaging a bully. What I have a hard time with is DJ being that heroic.)

tbh, I think Axl used to exaggerate stuff like this back in the day, too.
The story struck me as 1987-88 Axl.
Bingo. I think Axl put himself over as a heel back in the day, like a wrestling character.
I think alot of it was total WWF exaggerated shit.
I think Axl Rose is as much a real life bad ass as I think Stone Cold Steve Austin ran over his boss' limo with a monster truck.
