Re: Chinese Democracy now $1.99
CD in no universe has 'great singles'.
Gimme some of that crack, 'cause that shit has got to be all-time.
Better was voted one of the best singles of the year by RS and I believe CD was, too. Like I said before, TWAT and Prostitute had great potential, but nothing would help if they didn't tour or promote the thing.
That's why bands, no matter how huge they are, promote and tour their new albums when they're released.

You're right - eerybody hated the album because of their bias. Only those that love it are objective. Good day, move along.
Well, I can see this whole dialog was unequivocally an exercise in futility as A) yes, I did answer your question. Very clearly in fact. B) I very clearly did not say "everybody" hated the album because of some bias. If you had actually read what I said, you would see I wrote, "Certainly, there were people that legitimately didn't like the record on its own merits. But, to say that there weren't those who were prejudiced towards the record is incredibly myopic."
I would ask you if you can see the difference between what you claim I wrote/said and what I actually wrote, but that would obviously be futile - you either can't or choose not to read and/or correctly interpret/comprehend what I write on this topic.
Ali
I would think you would be able to do the same with what I wrote. Sucks when the tables are turned on you, doesn't it?
Uh, not exactly. But, nice try.

Since we're all stating opinions for zillionth time, and no one is going to change it, just some childish "I'm right, you're wrong", thought I'd add mine.
Agreed. I'd take CD over the UYIs any day of the week. Now, it would be interesting if the UYIs were condensed into a single record.
Ali
You know, the UYI as a single record argument is something that never gets old for me. One album with the best songs would have been better than AFD with another co-producer brought in to tighten it up. Getting the best songs to actually fit on a single album would be tough, though, without some serious editting.
Agreed. One single UYI album would surpass AFD in my opinion. As it stands now, I'll take CD over either UYI album because I think CD is far more even than either UYI album.

I do think that's a big factor for sure.
I think everyone in classic GNR was important, but there's no doubting that the most iconic parts of the magic for regular people were Axl and Slash. So pretty much people want that.
That was exactly the point I was trying to bring up earlier, that a GN'R album without Slash was destined for preconceived notions and prejudice by some fraction of the public. Guess I'm not the only one who thought that

Re: Chinese Democracy now $1.99
the public lost any and every ounce of interest when they realized Axl wasn't going to be heard from
The public lost interest when they heard the songs. The pre-release myspace stream proved this. The first song(CD) had a shitload of listens, then it nosedived the further down you went through the track list. The final song only had a few thousand listens. While everyone raved on CD breaking some myspace record, it actually showed that the album's goose was already cooked.
"Street of Dreams" was never officially released as a single. It was rumored to be the 3rd single, but that never happened.
Street of Dreams was officially released as a single on March 14th, 2009. The release was just handled terribly. I would place blame on the label for this as MIA went through something similar with one of her singles from Kala(both GNR and MIA on the same label. She released Boyz as a single, was getting massive buzz and charting on various radio charts across the globe(Street of Dreams was dead on arrival though), yet fans couldn't even find a place to buy it in the first few weeks of its release(online and in stores). A total fiasco which caused her to move on to a new single. Both situations not identical obviously but shows how the label fucked up single releases from two major artists on its label. One willing to play ball and keep going while the other didn't give a shit.
people don't buy ROCK albums anymore.
You're saying this again?
People can continue to say that it failed to sell because it's a shitty album, but you can't discount that there were a multitude of reasons for the albums poor performance.
I think most would agree there are many reasons for how the whole thing turned out, but like I said before, it still comes down to the music. A red hot single would have caused it to fly off the shelves even with Axl hibernating.
But if black ice had come out without so much as a squeek from the label I think we'd have a similar situation over at AC/DC...
AC/DC had been gone almost as long as GNR. People wanted to hear new tracks. Once Rock N Roll train hit radio, people were on it like flies on shit.
Yes it was promoted but like I said before, you need catchy singles that people actually want to hear. I'm not saying that album is better than CD(I thought it sucked actually), but most AC/DC fans liked it so they jumped all over it. It sold SIX MILLION copies(even though people don't buy rock albums ) and did so without even being available on Itunes. Album may have sold 9 or 10 million had it been released on various online music outlets.
Re: Chinese Democracy now $1.99
that AC/DC album is crap and you know it James. But, yes, you are right. A couple of hit singles and it sells huge....like Eminem which is actually the closest thing to Axl. I think TWAT was the song that needed to be played first. Hit them with your only Big Gun....full length, no cuts.
Re: Chinese Democracy now $1.99
James, where are you getting your information on SOD being released as a single? I never thought it was officially released as a single. I never heard it once on the radio.
And I will continue to say that rock albums don't sell anymore. How else would you explain that NO rock album cracked the top 25 in sales last year? The top "rock" seller was Kings of Leon, I believe. Don't quote me on that, but it's clear ROCK doesn't sell anywhere near pop/rap/country/any other genre these days. Black Ice, Death Magnetic, No Line on the Horizon, and even Chinese Democracy to a lesser extent were the last rock albums to sell real well. Some pretty successful rock bands like Pearl Jam and Bon Jovi have released albums in the past few years and they haven't sold that well. You want to point to two exceptions, fine, but I'm going with the norm.
And I'm still waiting to hear that ONE single that exploded with no help from the artist and/or label. Until I hear ONE example, I'm going to keep saying that NO single stands a chance without a little help.
