Re: Arnold to reprise 'The Terminator'
Arnold To Play The Terminator Once Again
by Will Leitch / Yahoo! Movies
Sylvester Stallone spent nearly a decade making straight-to-DVD dreck like "Shade" and "D-Tox" before finally acquiescing to his fans and playing, once again, his two most iconic characters, Rocky and Rambo. Arnold Schwarzenegger spent nearly a decade trying to fix the decrepit state of California, which might have even been worse than "Avenging Angelo." Now that he is returning to acting, it looks like he's gonna go the Stallone route.
Deadline reported last night that the long-awaited comeback project for Schwarzenegger will be ... "The Terminator," again. Arnold's agents are out shopping a package that involve Ah-nold teaming with "Fast Five" director Justin Lin to bring the T-800 back to the big screen. They don't have a script, they don't have a target date and they don't even have a firm grasp on who owns the Terminator franchise ... but they have Arnold willing to play the part again. That's enough.
Schwarzenegger had been eyeing several comeback roles after his years as governor, including, intriguingly, "Last Stand" for director Kim Ji-Woon. But considering how long it has been since he was a top-of-the-line movie star, and how much the industry has changed since then, he appears to have decided to return with a safer bet.
The legitimate question arises: Uh, isn't Schwarzenegger, who will be 64 this summer, a little old to be playing the Terminator? Stallone is a year older, but Rocky and Rambo are live human beings who age; the Terminator is a robot who, presumably, wouldn't be modeled after an elderly person. As IFC's Matt Singer points out, Schwarzenegger looked a little old to be playing the Terminator when he last did eight yars ago; how can he possibly be a bionic kililng machine today?
If he wanted to go the Jeff Bridges in "Tron" route, well, that seems like a lot of work just to make a lead actor look younger than he really is, and besides ... in 2009's "Terminator: Salvation," they sorta tried this. Remember, Arnold's face and body (or at least his 1985 body) showed up in that too.
It might be difficult to put up with a whole movie of that sort of uncanny valley CGI, and it's strange to think that the major special effect in an action movie would be to nip and tuck the lead actor's body ... but even that film, a reboot of the whole franchise, recognized that the only true Terminator was Arnold. He seems to realize that now as well.
Re: Arnold to reprise 'The Terminator'
Personally with the shit-tastic crop of new age action heroes (seriously, Jeremy Renner & Adrian Brody are the future?), with Sylvester Stallone's great return in The Expendables, I have absolutely no problem watching a 64 or 65-year old Arnold lead an action film.
Hell, Clint Eastwood was like 80 and did Gran Torino (even though he did direct it), and he was great in it.
Personally I think Hollywood's new age, it's just not there. I'd be a little bit more open to letting some of these older actors do leads again.
Right now there's an 80's rebirth going on for a bit period, and strike while the iron is hot. Hell they could probably put Chuck Norris back in theaters and it do decent box office.

Re: Arnold to reprise 'The Terminator'
As long as they don't get self concious about the age I think it could work.
To me arnie has enough charisma to make up for any age issue - especially with modern effects where they could easily buff him up a little.
I only mention the self concious thing....cos of like Indy 4 - to me harrision is the man and could easily have played an older indiana jones without issue - but it seemed the script was so self concious about it - so there's lots of old jokes, and the whole thing with his son, and it ended up making him seem older than he needed to come across.
I guess it is a problem that the robot doesnt age...but still....at the end of the day most of these movies are how you sell it...and a guy like arnie can sell.
The real problem is Terminator without James Cameron...imo.
Re: Arnold to reprise 'The Terminator'
Ab-so-lutely. Terminator without Cameron hasn't been the same. T1 & T2 are in a whole 'nother league compared to anything else that came after.
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles attempted to give the years after T2 some depth and dramatic appeal, but the show was low-rated.
T3 & T4, although not bad films, kind of dumbed down the franchise into just summer action-fare.
I wonder if Cameron could be convinced to come back to the franchise for a reboot-style T5 with Arnold. Despite the divorce shit, Linda Hamilton also said she wouldn't hesistate to reprise Sarah Connor with Cameron on board. If Sigorney Weaver could be in Avatar, I don't see why Hamilton couldn't co-star another Terminator film, especially with Cameron directing.
Robert Patrick awhile back threw around the idea of being the scientist that designs the T-1000, which would allow him to return.
They could re-build the entire T1 & T2 casts (with the exception of the deceased), including Arnold, Michael Biehn & Robert Patrick with the use of CGI, and do another big-budget T2 meets Avatar-type of film.
It'd do alot to erase all the enormous mistakes and missteps that T3 & T4 took. Kind of like the first REAL Terminator 3.
Fanboyism I know, but it'd be nice.

Re: Arnold to reprise 'The Terminator'
I think an aged T-800 Arnie could actually work in as an interesting angle to the storyline actually...
As terminators aren't supposed to age, the bond developed between John and Arnold that developed in T2 could be used as a ploy for Arnie to return as an aging father-figure to John in his later years or something like that. A different tactic for Skynet to get close to John Connor, and terminate him...!
Surely a good script writer (Cameron would be great) could do something with this "aged Arnie" angle.

I agree with Axlin08. The new generation of male action stars suck big time so I have no problem with a few of the old timers keeping the genre going for another 5-10 years until Hollywood can find actors capable of carrying the jockstraps of these legends.
He was supposed to do a sequel to True Lies until he decided to run for governor. I'd love to see that happen.

I think they're actually working on a True Lies TV show.
It would be cool to see a movie with Christian Bale and Arnie.

Honestly, and I don't say this because he was in both T4 & Avatar, that Sam Worthington guy is the only throwback action-lead type that i've seen out of the new crop.
But Sam Worthington can't be in everything.
And before anyone says Jason Statham, I thought that guy blew major chimp years ago. SUCKS. The ONLY thing I ever liked him in was The Expendables and Ghosts of Mars.
Re: Arnold to reprise 'The Terminator'
While he's starting to age, Sam Rockwell is an amazing actor and under the right circumstances could become an action star. I could easily see him in a Keanu Reeves 'Speed' type situation.
He's the most underrated actor in decades. Its a shame it took so long for his career to get off the ground.

I was a real fan of that show and was gutted when I suddenly found it it was ended, like the last episode was the time I found out.... It had more potential than some give it credit for. One of my favourite scenes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o27Wdd_T4tg
