Are you sure? I heard she wasn't offered the role because of the sideshow that was her and Tom Cruise when Batman Begins came out. They didn't want such a gong show surrounding the Dark Knight. Tom Cruise is nuts but I don't think even he's that nuts to tell her not to take that role. Maybe I'm wrong.
Either way Maggie sucked in the role. She may be a better actress but Katie played the role ten times better in my opinion.
Of course she did, because Begins was built around the characters of Bruce & Rachel.
By the time TDK came around, Rachel was a side-character involved with Dent (a doomed character obviously), and really a character who's only central point was to die in TDK. Not to mention in Begins, Rachel is the central connection to the DA's office, whereas in TDK Harvey Dent is, which pretty much kills the coverage for the Rachel character in the script in comparison to Begins.
The same kind of dialogue, purpose, coverage, etc. wasn't there for Maggie.
In other words, had Maggie been in Begins, it would've been just as good. Both her and Katie had good chemistry with Christian Bale.
