Best known as the bassist for GUNS N’ ROSES and VELVET REVOLVER, Duff McKagan straps on the guitar and assumes lead vocal duties in his other band, LOADED. The Taking is this outfit’s third album – and the first to be produced, recorded and mixed by Terry Date (SOUNDGARDEN, PANTERA, WHITE ZOMBIE). Despite having a big name behind the board, the group still maintains its rough edge; in fact this is their darkest effort to date. Album opener ‘Lords Of Abbadon’ sets the stage for a no-frills punk ‘n roll set. Somewhat surprisingly, The Taking is a semi-concept album as first single ‘Dead Skin’, along with ‘Easier Lying’ and ‘She’s An Anchor’ center on the end of a relationship. In the words of McKagan himself: “Pain, loss, triumph and redemption.” Conversely, ‘We Win’ is a sports appropriate anthem already embraced by both the NFL and MLB; whereas ‘Cocaine’ is all about the ugly side of addiction – “tremors, shakes, can’t stop today.” The unpolished anguish and irrefutable integrity coursing through Loaded’s collective veins genuinely legitimize the harsh reality depicted in ‘Executioner’s Song’. For all its cuts and bruises, The Taking possesses a couple of welcome bright spots - namely ‘Indian Summer’ and ‘Wrecking Ball’. Leaving his prestigious awards and copious album sales in the dust, Duff returns to his roots with a real as it gets DIY offering.
