Re: Journey's new CD a masterpiece?
One thing for sure, Neal Schon is on his game. Like Slash, he is getting better as he ages and stays sober. Schon is so underrated, he's one of the best ever but will never get that recognition because he was in Journey. Critics hate Journey, but they've been nothing but one of the most successful American rock bands for almost 40 years now.

Picked this up, and I gotta say, this CD is PHENOMENAL.
I won't call it a masterpiece, but I'd say it's the best since Escape. Yes, even surpassing Frontiers as a whole, top to bottom.
This is definitely Neal Schon's baby. His guitar work is just out of this world. He's getting better, oddly.
To be clear, though, this isn't a typical fluffy Journey CD. The topics are worldly, introspective, big-boy themes. There are some expected, typical Journey anthems, but the bulk is new territory.
The melodies and choruses and hooks are not as huge, they are more subtle, but they still work their way into your head.
Arnel Pineda has made a huge jump vocally. He's more an individual, yet still sounds eerily like Steve Perry at times. He stretches himself at points till it sounds like he's about to break.
Deen Castronovo's drumming is a big surprise too. He's monstrous on some of these tunes.
All in all, pick it up without hesitation. The best rock record of the year so far. Laugh at me if you want, but these guys are pushing 60 and are on top of their game--again. To go out and do something so out of their comfort zone at this stage of their career is astounding.
