Just want back to the 99 demo, and it's clearly better. More focused, less mixing, more raw. All in all just a better product than the 2008 final version. They should have fucking let the song stay like that and just added less...

Catcher in the overkill.

Catcher is, with Madagascar, GNR songs with touches of brilliance that they just couldn't focus and unleash like they should have been. The product and ideas are all there, they just wasn't able to bring it forward.

Lost in mixing and pro tools and God knows what. The more chefs..the more mess...the methapores are many

November rain with just Slash on the twelve string guitar makes Axl's vocal sound so sad and haunting, its awesome.
I think Axl is too insecure to just leave the soul of his songs hanging out there, he [over]dresses the shit out of them

i agree. tho he might argue the case he's already done that starkness on Lies. but that shouldn't mean that it's territory not worth revisiting. he's such a great vocalist it's a shame he hasn't produced the volume of material it deserves - the great tragedy of the band is, of course, the unfulfilled potential. so it's apt to the story writ large that he hasn't delivered songs more heavily reliant on his greatest attribute.

an itunes live ep of those 'acoustic' songs, such as the paris one (those gigs are the only time i've liked CitR),would have been a reasonable request for any other band.. for GnR it'd have extra significance.. which is partly why it'd never happen (i.e. axl's insecure also in releasing live documents - or releasing anything, of course
- & the dreaded 'red tape' that's constantly noosed around his neck).

That's the perfectionist coming out of Axl.

Once you send the song out there, you want it to be perfect. Not just good. By the time you get to that moment, the moment itself has passed, and the song is a bastardized version of the original vision.

I can attest to that. However in some cases it's a good thing. Without Axl's ideas, NR & Estranged wouldn't have grown into the legendary songs they became. Guys like Slash, Izzy & Duff would've just sent them out the door in '88, and they were FAR better songs in there than just the bare-basics.

Songs like that NEED to be epic, in nature. However in their defense and against Axl - not EVERY song needs to be epic in nature.

Axl worked on CD for how long, and he still didn't have a Sucker Train Blues or Slither in his pocket. Half of Izzy's catalog are better rockers than what CD has got. Look at Tommy... how quick did it take him with Rich & Dizzy to whip up "One Man Mutiny"? It'd of taken Axl years to approve a song like that, which destroys any rocker on CD.

In the case of rockers - less IS more. In the case of ballads - GO BIG or go home.

If Axl could fine hone that, he could pump out classic GN'R album each year with the current lineup, especially with guys like himself, Chris & Dizzy handling the ballads, and letting Tommy, DJ & Ron spear-head the rockers.

Are you classifying "One Man Mutiny" as a rocker?

Not sure what you're going for there.

I think the rockers on CD are just fine.  Nothing monumental, but they do the trick for me.

nah u don't always have to go big on the ballads. patience is proof of that in the gnr catalogue - so are the wrecked potential of streets of dreams & CitR two songs that work better with less production.

Absolutely. When you rip your heart out, then you don't need to pour sugar on it, place 50 roses besides it, add a golden ribbon, and deliver it on a white horse. Cause this happened to potential classics, like This I Love and Street of Dreams.

Just place your bloody heart on a plate and see the reaction.

When the pain is big, less is more. Some of the most wonderful ballads are on Nick Cave's The Boatman Call and No More Shall We Part albums, which are anything, but overproduced and overworked.
