Re: RUMOR: GN'R Planning SA tour around RIR
Russ you really need to get a clue. You cant deny people were claiming on these boards CD was going to save rock and make Gnr huge again. It doesnt matter their thinking is, the fact is it was said and it was wrong. And why were people saying that? Well AFD blew up and gnr got huge, then UYI came out, and it made Gnr even bigger. So people on the boards thought Axl would do it again but he failed Music was terrible while Gnr was being made, pop and rap was dominating, most of us thought axl was going to be back on top again.
CD is the first Gnr album (of orginal material) that has flopped in the US.
Why wouldnt most people expect it to do well?
And you poor attempt at wit is getting boring, if you are going to try to be witty at least be good at it.
Re: RUMOR: GN'R Planning SA tour around RIR
For some people Russ, not many. And I'd argue that some of them are doing it just to save face. If anybody really thinks CD is on par or better than the other albums, they really need to go back and listen to the other albums again. Just on production value alone, CD isn't worthy of any band on a major label. The album is everything, not just the lyrics or music, or name of the lead singer. CD is a subpar album. It would be difficult to argue otherwise. If Axl wasn't the singer, quite frankly most of you wouldn't have ever heard it and certainly wouldn't accept it as a quality album.
Edit: in fact, if Axl wasn't the singer and the band wasn't named gnr AND the best buy deal wasn't struck, this album would have never been released. Not the way it was at least. It needs a complete overhaul.

I can understand how some people don't like the album, but I don't agree with you that some people are saying how good the album to save face. What would be the point of that? I love the album. I certainly think it's on par, if not better than either of the UYI's. AFD is obviously untouchable, but I haven't listened to it once since CD's release. It's not saving face. People have different opinions. There are plenty of people who prefer UYI 1 or 2 over AFD. They're not saving face, those albums just hit them in a certain way.
And what's your point about not caring about this album if it wasn't GNR or Axl? I'm sure Jim Croce put out some great albums, but I don't care about Jim Croce, so I wouldn't know. I care about GNR, so obviously I'm going to consume whatever they throw at me.

I dunno man, I before I say anything, AFD, the UYIs, Lies, and even TSI are pretty much my favourite albums of all time. I love those albums dearly.
But at the same time, when it comes to go back and listen again, I think it's also possible to elevate them to unrealistic levels.
There are songs on those albums that are amongst the best songs of all time, but there's also moments that arn't as good.
Although the thing with me and GNR is that the GNR song I like least I probably like more than I like 95% of other bands stuff anyway - hense why i'm on a board like this...but that said....I do think the older albums have moments of pure genius, but also tracks that are not as awesome.
In terms of Axl's singing, his writing, and his songcraft I don't think I'd say CD is better, but it's at that level.
It's sort of like doing the "which is better - AFD or UYI" - like the best songs on UYI are better than the worst songs on AFD, and the best songs on AFD are better than the worst songs on UYI.
I see it the same, there's selected tracks from CD that I prefer over selected older tracks, and there's older tracks I like above all else as well.
You say if it wasn't axl we'd hate the songs, but I think it's the opposite, i think if it wasnt for all the old/new GNR politics people would be more open to these songs - as many of them could have been on UYI just a little different.
The blues isn't all that different to don't cry. TWAT is kinda like a breakdown type song. Or madagascar....with a slash solo in the middle would be very much a uyi track...and this i love is clearly similar to estranged or november rain in terms of Axl's parts.
To me CD is the obvious way for axl to continue the type of songs he started making around UYI.
I don't think it's better than the old albums, but it's a very worthy companion piece. Just as I also don't subscribe to those who say slash has done nothing good since UYI - put Axl on "By the Sword" and it would be pretty much as good as any of the UYI 1 tracks.
Re: RUMOR: GN'R Planning SA tour around RIR
Agreed monkey. I've always viewed CD as a perfect compliment to the UYI's. I don't really get the comments of the CD songs not sounding like Guns N' Roses when it sounds to me like most of them could've been on either of those albums without skipping a beat. And as for it being ballad heavy. Again there were a lot more ballads on the UYI's than AFD and people didn't seem to have too much of a problem with that. It all seems like a natural progression to me, albeit much later than hoped/expected.
Agreed about Slash too. I liked his solo album and don't pine to hear Axl on those songs. They're fine the way they are. Same with Velvet Revolver. I enjoyed them for what they were. We're not getting back the classic GNR lineup. The sooner people come to grips with that, the better off they'll be. Now I'm not forcing you to like that, but you have to accept this whole situation for what it is.
Re: RUMOR: GN'R Planning SA tour around RIR
fwiw, for me CD is worthy of the name Guns N Roses.
that's all i could have asked for & i think i got it, & more.
Re: RUMOR: GN'R Planning SA tour around RIR
I love some of Chinese. However, I must say that there isn't one song on the album that I think is "perfect" to my ears. There are multiple things on every song that I don't like. To me, Estranged, Civil War, SCOM, Locomotive, 14 Years, Double Talkin Jive, The Garden, Jungle, etc don't have any thing about them that I dislike.
There is just too many different people involved for me to call it a true Gnr record. It's an Axl solo record, but I still dig it overall.

The blues isn't all that different to don't cry.
Except for the fact that Don't Cry has an infinitely better chorus and guitar work.
Re: RUMOR: GN'R Planning SA tour around RIR
I really think axl set out to make a masterpiece and when he realized it wasn't going to happen, he completely gave up on it. Clearly there were other factors as well, but I think at some point he just said screw it and released the mess that we have now. I think CD could have been gnr worthy to the masses, but he just couldn't get it there before the best buy deal came along and time ran out.
