Dave, as an artist, Axl would have been WAY better off-would have allowed him much more artistic freedom. I can't decide on the business side of things. It cuts both ways. He makes a little more money from touring and merchandise by keeping the name. However, in the long run, he has damaged the brand a bit. The legacy of the band and Axl's own legacy, if Axl would have ended it when Slash left, would be absolutely immaculate right now. It's strong anyway, but the Chinese Debacle hurt a bit. Hindsight is 20/20. 17

and ps....I think Chinese would have been much better received as an Axl solo record.

Half a star to one star more in anyone's book.

However, people would've noted that while the production is like from a supercharged UYI III, there is not one 'above the cut' guitarist keeping it all together anymore. IMO, Axl needs lead guitarists as songwriting partners, which he now has in DJ (the little I like his adverts) and Ron, and he needs to allow them to rise to the occasion.

Don't think it would help.

People didn't respond to Snakepit well because it wasn't named GNR...they just said "Fuck this, that guy doesn't sing like Axl, wtf...go back to GNR already"

And likewise Axl could have released "W.A.R. : Chinese Democracy" and people would have been like "Fuck this, those guys don't play like slash, reform GNR already"

For the record i'm a fan of Snakepit and modern GNR - but I'm just saying people want what they want - and that's the chemestry of Axl and Slash - in the end a name is just a name.

I've often wondered if he is too scared to let one of the guitarists really shine and play a leading part, lest he end up in a similar position to when Slash left.  Having three guitarists and with no one in particular really the star lead guy helps him hedge his bets.  If one leaves then they are much eaiser to replace and people won't say, oh but XYZ guitarist is no longer with him it's not GNR anymore.

I mean after Slash it happened to him again to a lesser extent with Bucket.  Perhaps he doesn't want a third guitarist to become too iconic and synonomous with the GNR name.

I agree, but he could have toured under Axl Rose of guns n roses or something like that and still kind of had the brand name for touring. And if he did release the cd under just Axl, I agree it would have been better recieved because everyone would not have expected it to compete with  guns n roses albums.

dave, it must be so difficult responding to others' posts when you have all the different tones coming your way; sarcaasm, dislike, humor, etc.

I don't know how you do it.

if you don't single handedly restore integrity and harmony to this thread you will be a failure.

Its because they cannot refute what I am saying because they know i am right, so they have to joke or be sarcastic about it.

That is the problem with people not debating the topic at hand.

Like I said,  no one can dispute tones of people on these boards were claiming CD was going to be a huge success and "save rock"

it doesnt mean everyone was saying it but a good majority of the people were, the fact that there are mostly newbies on these boards now who were not here back in 98-2005 shouldnt be comementing on it because they were not here, so how would they know?

Anyone who defends Axl at this point is living in Jarmoland.

So I'll ask again (3rd time);

How is expectations that you or anyone else put on the album, the responsibility of Guns N' Roses?

Because Axl is using the name guns n roses, fans expect the album to be of quality of the name its  under.

You really dont think if Mick Jaggars solo albums were under the name rolling stones that those fans would not expect his albums to be of RS quaility?

They say that now about CD anyways, this shit isnt gnr,  you are nothing without slash, you shouldnt be calling this band Gnr, what is the difference?

At least people would respect Axl more for not using the name guns n roses.  They would be asking for a reunion either way. Nothing would really change but the name of the band.  At least Axl would look like such a DB for pissing all over the name guns n roses.
