Well when Robin left in 1998 he did say there were not many songs finished and just a bunch of ideas.  It seemed like Axl just took a bunch of random guitar parts and made them into a song.  That is why better for example sounds like two different songs, the poppy part that is most of the song and that metal part in the middle.

Thats probably why it took so long because he must have had thousands of ideas or takes down, and he just copied and pasted them together to make songs

Before we go bagging on Axl too much and the guitars on CD, not all of the album's guitar work is treacherous, but Catcher & I.R.S. for me just stuck out when I was remixing the album. Even last summer I was stunned in shock at how fucking terrible the guitar work was.

But in fairness, there were surprises too. Like for my remixed albums, I decided to make both "Scraped" & "Riad" strictly instrumentals - the only instrumentals on the album.

I'm pretty sure it's Richard Fortus riffing the shit out of Scraped, and it sounds pretty fucking heavy and killer. He's not getting near his "secret weapon" myth, but I remember being pretty impressed. This song is far better without Axl, so is Riad. Bucket also has some cool small moments in Scraped.

CD & Shackler are pretty much what you see is what you get. 'Bout the only think to do here was turn up the guitars & drums for a heavier sound, and fuck with the vocals and intros/outros for effect.

Better was a fucking nightmare to wade through. Robin & Bucket both turned in some amazing guitar work. Pitman buried so much unnecessary, and fucking pointless synth jerking off in it, that I pretty much deleted the whole thing.

Street of Dreams, although not the electric-guitar driven rock-ballad of 2001-02, has some nice acoustic guitar moments from Robin, and some electric-guitar moments from Robin that keeps the songs original soul. Although the orchestra in this is BEAU-TI-FUL, a nice mix between the two gives the song a more rockin' feel, rather than the "just another Axl ballad" feel it has on the album.

If The World sounds like it does solely because of Chris Pitman, and give him a pat on the back, because Mother Goose turns it into the great epic it is on the album. BECAUSE, when you take Chris out of it - it's a total porno song, completely. The entire feel of the song is totally different without Chris.

There Was A Time has ALOT of great guitars, both Robin & Bucket that are straight-forward guitar, and a great guitar outro that gives TWAT a more rockin' edge that was lost with the orchestral stuff thrown on it. The orchestral stuff is great too, and the studio version of TWAT is still the best i've heard the song and a total masterpiece, but it's nice to hear just how beautiful the guitars were.

Sorry is probably the biggest example of "recorded in 6 minutes, 8 years, and 14 different studios" and the clusterfuck legend of CD, of all the songs on there. The guitar work from Bucket is amazing, it's the rest that is very disjointed and glarying how the song somehow manages to pull itself off, despite holding itself back so much. Baz's vocals are more suited to the chorus, yet auto-tuned, plus in the vocal mix there's alot of yelping at odd places, that's Tommy or Dizzy or someone doing backing vocals for harmonious effect that are just "wah" moments. The other weird Pitman moment is an underlying 'ambient' sound that turned up sounds like the soundtrack to Halloween.

I.R.S. is a total pathetic piece of shit inside and out. It took me fucking days to wade through this minefield of a song and mix, and even still it somehow managed to come out worse.

Madagascar is another with beautiful and amazing guitar work from Bucket. As much as I love the studio version, I can't help but feel there was an even better song buried in there. Lose the speeches, turn up the guitar and you've got one of the best Bucket solos and best GN'R solos on the song. Threw out Axl's low-vocals in the outro - just unnecessary. The biggest shock is, there is another beautiful orchestra from Pitman buried in the mix that is just heavenly. Used a big chunk of it for a rearranged outro, because to turn it up in the mix would kill Bucket's contribution. Amazing work here really, although admittingly I was always a big fan boy of Maddy.

This I Love - total masterpiece. Only thing it ever needed was Robin's guitar backing the orchestra... with that - total GN'R classic, the sequel to November Rain.

Prostitute, I remember alot of great guitars getting buried under the synth in this one. More great, and frankly overlooked work in here, mainly because it was the last cut on the record, it's not overly popular, and it's rarely been played live.

Just my two cents on the album mixes

I didn't even notice it that much until I remixed the album last summer and brought the guitar up in it - eek.

Speaking of which, forum member "Evads" mixed May's solo into the studio version:

http://www.4shared.com/audio/wVX-G2xJ/04_Catcher.html

I'm glad he did this, but I have one small complaint. The May solo is a little too low in the mix for my liking. Can you or someone else here remix it to feature May's solo more prominently like it was in the demo? Maybe just lower the volume a bit on the background guitars. Thanks.

If I remember, Evads said he had to do that because the pacing of the May demo, was different to the studio version. I think he said the tempo on the '99 demo was slower than the studio version on CD, so he had to redo that to match the studio version. Plus, we do have the master-mix for the studio Catcher, but not the demo Catcher. I think it could be done simply on the solo if the two versions were remixed again together, but not in the rest of the song, because the pacing is different.

Evads probably could be of bigger help on this, because he's more of an expert at it than I am.

CD would have been way better if just BH and Robin were on it, and did all their guitar parts in one take.  There were not need for any more guitarist than Robin and Bucket

The whole album would have been better without Robin on it. Nothing anybody says is ever going to change my opinion on that. His contributions should have been limited to songwriting, and even that I'm not sure about.

Interesting stuff. Have you posted your remixes on here before? I would love to hear them, especially Better without the synth crap and Riad/Scraped without Axl.

i totally feel where you are coming from on that matter Dave, and i have championed that sentiment in the past, but I've come to the realization recently it doesnt matter who is/was in the band at that time ... CD was never going to have a whole song done in one take, i dont know if Axl will ever release a song like that again for that matter...he likes to tinker and tweak shit too much...and its not just him there are alot of bands anymore that need the "perfect take" but some of the best tunes ever have flawed portions that give them that extra authenticity and x factor quality

Yeah I also agree with Dave here that had Axl used the blueprint of these songs to re-record in just one take, it would've flowed ALOT better.

Would have been nice to get some new vocals on a number of tracks as well.
