never liked the CITR demo
don't really like the 'finished' version either, but ron added some nice bits especially the on outro/final quarter (if memory serves)

I have exactly the same thoughts on the tune.

x3 was kinda bummed when the leaked track list came out and said that citr was gonna be on it...but now its among my fav tunes on the album...

the small joke to be made from it all is, on tour, any member/future member of gnr is now not only playing a cover of the whole gnr back catalogue, covers of other members in gnr since, but also a solo made by someone not even in the band, which is what Ron's solo is, someone elses version of it, and not their own.

Ron's solo in Catcher is outright terrible to my ears. It sounds so disjointed and jolty, which doesn't suit the song at all. I always dug the Brian solo in the demo, and I don't remember hearing much Slash vs Brian talk back in the day about it either.

I'm really surprised Axl would give a fuck either way what others might say anyway, it's HIS music, and as long as he likes it, who cares if some people wanted Slash instead of Brian.

The guitars on the album version ruin what was once my favourite new GNR song, I absolutely loved the demo.

Its like Ron was playing along to an instrumental and had no idea how the lyric structure would fit in, his last solo does nothing to compliment the vocals and they both clash.
I kinda feel sorry for him though now knowing that he was just given a laptop and headphones and sent to a wee room to record new parts on the songs. The version he was playing live last year was much more melodic, I guess he isnt too satisfied with the final cut either.

The album version must have had different leads on it before he recorded his parts over it, Robin and Bucket mabye 11

I'd imagine that legal bullshit has more to do with the reason why they didn't use Brian May's solo. Those sessions were produced by Roy Thomas Baker, right? And if he was dumped as a producer then it probably would be less messy legally to simply not use anything from the sessions he worked on.

I still would have preferred Brian May to re-record his solo, though, than have Ron or one of the other guys do it.

yet another bizarre and frankly paranoid comment by Axl. I don't recall hearing anyone ever talk about Slash in relation to that solo. It was a leaked demo for crying out loud - there was a buzz that Brian May was on it for sure, but what was he expecting.

Just another example of how precious Axl really is about the album. He just had to go on record implying, "Brian's great, but really, Sean and I made that solo." His account was canned by May, who, for the record, has been consistent in saying that his solo was comped. He did a lot of that himself.

Nope. Sean Beavan. RTB was "involved" in whatever capacity at that point in time, before replacing Beavan some months later.

Why didn't one of Axls hired guns come up with a solo?  Why use Brian?  And since when did Axl pick up a guitar and make a solo?  Pro-tool guitar.

I think Brian was brought in to contribute on some songs when Robin first left in 1999. Axl was looking at re-recording Robin's parts, before Robin ended up coming back again.
