No they don't, not to my knowledge. Although the RIAA & Wikipedia hasn't caught up, Best Buy outright bought like 1.5 million copies of CD, and those copies cleared as album sales.

The stock BB is trying to unload is the same original stock, so no, I don't think this is going to affect CD's sales. It'll still be within that 1.5mil mark.

They didn't count those 1.5 million copies as albums sold. It's tallied by how many copies are spit through the register at the end of a week.

It's how the GH kept moving back up into the charts after disappearing.

Yeah that's how I understand it as well.  Those 1.5 million copies were counted as albums SHIPPED, not sold.  That's why when people talk about how many units have sold in the US the 400-500k mark gets brought up, not 1.5 million.

Anyhow, I went into my local Best Buy today to check things out.  First off, I was kind of surprised at the amount of copies they had on the shelves.  It was much less than I expected.  I counted 31 total, spread between the GNR and New Releases sections.  After I got done with them, they had 26.  Now who's to say, they don't have 500 more in a backroom somewhere?  But I was expecting many more on the shelves.  And they were all listed at $9.99, so this mega-deal is going to go unnoticed by most people.  I asked one of the guys who worked there for a price check just to make sure and he doubted me when I told him it was only $1.99.  But he checked it out and concurred.  Then he snidely remarked, "well it wasn't one of their best albums."

I then told him I'd do him a favor and take 5 off his hands.  He told me that there weren't any limitations and I could take 10 if I wanted.  Funny guy.  He then said that it might not be a bad idea to buy a bunch and sell them for $4 each, double your profit.  Not a bad idea, but I'll choose to just give the 5 copies away.  None of my friends buy CD's anymore and I know some are big GNR fans, at least of the classic lineup.  They've gone with me to concerts in 2002 and 2006 and they've tolerated the new stuff.  So maybe if they have it in their hands and listen to it, over time they can be won over.

Miracles can happen.  Though I'm not expecting much.  But I've already got 3 takers.  Can't go wrong for FREE!

And honestly, $1.99.  That is a BARGAIN!  I wish all CD's cost that little, my collection would grow exponentially.

1.99 - same as the cd.  There was 1 vinyl left and 10 CDs.

Having said that, here's hoping I can put together at least ONE copy that sounds good between all these:

I just had a damn funny image of you with a razor blade trying to cut on the lines around the record to literally put one together.

Probably gonna have to try to pick up a vinyl this weekend, I don't have a functional record player at the moment, but for 2 bucks, what the hell.

I wouldnt buy another vinyl no matter how cheap it was, half the songs sounded like they were being played though a 1950's radio.

If they ever bother to rerelease it with all the problems fixed I'd get it in a heartbeat.

Hey- these should still count as straight album sales, no? Not sure how these exclusive deals work.

No,,,,....TWO ways to track album sales:
1. RIAA (shipments to retail)-album is Platinum status-  (best buy actually bought 1.3 million with no ability to return them to Geffen).

2. Nielsen Soundscan (sales to the public)- about 600,000 actually bought by customers at the register.

Thus, if Best Buy unloads 100,000 of these, it won't affect the RIAA number. But, it will increase the Soundscan numbers.
