Total Guitar Magazine reader’s poll turns up some big surprises
Reported by Cameron Pirie
Published: March 21, 2011. © Rock AAA
Readers of Total Guitar answered the magazines call to vote when they recently conducted a poll to discover metal’s greatest shredders. However the results surprised magazine staff with a host of players expected to do well not making the final cut.
Metallica’s Kirk Hammet and Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine are possibly the biggest names to miss out, and Maiden’s Dave Murray makes the grade whist band mates Adrian Smith and Jannick Gers don’t
Other notable absentees are, Eddie Van Halen, Slash, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Jimmy Page, but perhaps the “metal” classification becomes cloudy round the edges (although it would be stretching the imagination to classify Rage Against the Machine or Alter Bridge as metal), or perhaps they simply didn’t receive enough votes… remember, a poll is about opinion…….
And the winners are…..
1. Alexi Laiho, Children of Bodom
2. John Petrucci, Dream Theater
3. Mick Thomson, Slipknot
4. Mark Tremonti, Alter Bridge
5. Dimebag Darrell Pantera
6. Mikael Akerfeldt, Opeth
7. James Hetfield, Metallica
8. Tony Iommi, Black Sabbath
9. Glenn Tipton, Judas Priest
10. Randy Rhoads Ozzy Osbourne
11. Daron Malakian, System of a Down
12. Dave Murray, Iron Maiden
13. Zakk Wylde, Black Label Society
14. Yngwie Malmsteen
15. Michael Amott, Arch Enemy, Carcass
16. Tom Morello, Rage Against the Machine
17. Marty Friedman Megadeth
18. Kerry King, Slayer
19. Gus G, Ozzy Osbourne, Firewind
20. Fredrik Thordendal, Meshuggah

Hetfield makes the list, but not Hammet? Huh?
John Petrucci is pretty accurate. Pretty amazing guy even though you don't hear his name thrown around the guitar gods.
Most of those awesome riffs in Metallica songs were written by Hetfield. Kirk can play a mean solo but it ain't what being a guitar player is all about.

^ Agreed but it depends on the wording of the poll.
When they say greatest metal shredders - do they just mean greatest guitarist in the sense that all guitarsts are shredders - or are they specifically refering to the style of playing - ie Shredding on guitar - fast soloing etc
James is in some ways the better player in Metallica, given he writes the riffs, and he can play those rhythms while singing...but if it came down to a stand alone shred off - Kirk can play faster than him in a pure speed test I'd bet.
I take Rus's point about EVH but then again Randy Roads is dead and so hasn't done anything new for a similar timeframe.
I think a big part of this is the classification as metal, slash isn't metal he's more rock - and Satch is prob one of the absolute best technical wizards on guitar and he can shred with the best of them - but the bulk of his work is not 'shred metal' either...so i think it comes down to the phrasing of this question.
However leaving mustaine off this list just draws into question it's credibility. The guy is an absolute top knotch metal guitarist in bith riffing, soloing, songwriting....it's basicly insanity to leave him out.

I thought they were talking about 'shredders', not riffs...

well a bass player like trujilo has the ability to pluck up to 4 strings at one time...guitarist would have to strum, not quite the same thing and flamenco (sp?) is hardly a style that is a normal influence for metal...kirk has the same expression in the "Wherever I May Roam" video when he picks up that mandolin...doesnt mean that he is a bad guitar player, its just something that he was unfamiliar with at the time that video was shot
