PEARL JAM: New Album In The Works - Mar. 16, 2011
PEARL JAM bassist Jeff Ament tells Billboard.com that the band has written 25 songs for a new album, to be recorded later this year. "April will be the time where we get together and learn to play all these demos and figure out which 12-15 of them float to the top," he said. According to Ament, the group has been focused on putting together reissues of its second and third albums, 1993's "Vs." and 1994's "Vitalogy", and working on a Cameron Crowde-directed documentary and book celebrating its 20th anniversary as a band.
PEARL JAM frontman Eddie Vedder is planning to release a solo album later this year. A new Vedder song called "Longing To Belong" popped up on a New York radio station on Monday (March 14) and it is reportedly from a new solo effort by Vedder, tentatively titled "Uke Songs", that may arrive in June. Vedder's previous solo album was not an official one, but the soundtrack to the 2007 movie "Into The Wild", for which he composed and performed nine new tracks.
Ament told The Pulse Of Radio that the way PEARL JAM has worked from the start leaves room for its members to do their own things as well. "I think the main thing is we wanted to be able to stretch out, and when I look at Ed and kind of what he's been able to do in terms of, like, you know, he's got his solo thing, and how he's pushed himself as a musician and creatively, you know, it makes me so proud of like, you know, how we were from the very beginning — how we wanted to be a band that could really dip our toes into a lot of different styles and dynamics," he said.
The first summer music festival ever put together by PEARL JAM itself will take place somewhere in the middle of the country this summer and feature a number of bands, along with PEARL JAM headlining both nights.

Re: PEARL JAM Planning To Launch Its Own Music Festival - Dec. 10, 2010
Something tells me that show would be abbreviated sets from both bands with some Temple of the Dog songs, so Matt only does like a regular full set on the drums. Not over taxing.
Soundgarden may have a shorter set. But Pearl Jam, since they are headlining their own festival, and because of the fact that they are Pearl Jam, will not do a shorter set. It would be against everything they stand for with live shows.
Re: PEARL JAM Planning To Launch Its Own Music Festival - Dec. 10, 2010
if it is a festival perhaps PJ will play on one night & SG on the other
matt cameron is an awesome drummer but there is simply no way he'd be able to play two 2hr or 2&1/2hr sets back to back. we could be wrong & he maybe could play for 5 or even 6 hours (if Temple of a Dog gets an airing) but i'd doubt it.
Backspacer was just alright. completely oversold/overhyped. not better than Riot Act or Binaural & nowhere near as good as Yield or their first three albums.
No Code & self-titled are the only real stinkers in the PJ catalogue.

Eddie Vedder & Cat Power Are Doing THAT SONG FROM THE JERK for Vedder's Ukulele Album
By Erin Thompson, Mon., Mar. 21 2011 @ 11:04AM
As reported last week, Eddie Vedder is releasing a solo album called Ukulele Songs, which will feature him singing and playing the titular ukulele. "Longing to Belong" is the album's pretty first single, and today we have news that the album will be released on May 31. A full tracklist has also been released--it's a mixture of Vedder originals and some covers; one song is a duet with Cat Power (with whom Vedder has collaborated in the past), and that song is the most adorable of all ukulele duets, "Tonight You Belong to Me," from the 1979 classic comedy The Jerk, originally performed by Steve Martin and Bernadette Peters. You know:
No word on if Cat Power will be whipping out a trumpet solo for her and Vedder's cover.
Here's Ukulele Songs' full tracklist:
1. Can't Keep
2. Sleeping by Myself
3. Without You
4. More Than You Know
5. Goodbye
6. Broken Heart
7. Satellite
8. Longing to Belong
9. Hey Fahkah
10. You're True
11. Light Today
12. Sleepless Nights (featuring Glen Hansard)
13. Once in Awhile
14. Waving Palms
15. Tonight You Belong to Me (featuring Cat Power)
16. Dream a Little Dream

PEARL JAM Voted 'Planet Defender' Of 2011 - Apr. 26, 2011
The Pulse Of Radio reports that PEARL JAM has been named 2011 Planet Defender by Rock The Earth, a not-for-profit environmental advocacy organization that often sets up shop at festivals or big rock concerts. According to Spinner.com, the organization awarded PEARL JAM in its artist category for the band's "ceaseless environmental activism throughout their illustrious 20-year career."
A statement at the Rock The Earth web site reads, "PEARL JAM ultimately hopes to become 0% net emissions for all tours and band businesses . . . In 2010, the band announced they would mitigate carbon emissions from their 2009 'Backspacer' tour by donating $210,000 towards planting trees in the area of Puget Sound, Washington. Rock the Earth applauds PEARL JAM for setting a stellar example of how to 'rock the earth' in a conscientious manner."
PEARL JAM teamed up with the Patagonia clothing and gear company this year for a new environmental awareness initiative.
The band continues to celebrate its 20th anniversary this year, issuing deluxe editions of its second and third albums, "Vs." and "Vitalogy", last month, planning a festival for late summer and prepping the release of a new career documentary in September.
The band also hopes to begin work on its 10th studio album this spring, while frontman Eddie Vedder will release a solo album and DVD in June and tour on his own.
