Re: Great Axl & Kurt article
Glad to see some AIC respect here, I still think that Nirvana (as good as they were) were definitely the bottom of the pile in the grunge heap as far as musical talent was concerned.
Although the fact that every modern rock band and singer tries to emulate AIC, and does it really badly, isn't really a good thing.
I've had some interesting discussions with some younger friends of mine who listen to these aforementioned AIC-clone bands, but don't actually listen to AIC. And I'm like "are you serious? AIC blow all these copycats out of the water!"
These are the same ones who listen to Nickelback, but don't like Metallica too, when at times Nickelback are Metallica-lite.
Damn kids today have no idea!
Re: Great Axl & Kurt article
i laugh when you guys say that nirvana had no talent
a big whatever to y'all...sure he wasnt a guitar god but he was good...and he sang as well...ever try to sing a nirvana song and play it on guitar at the same time? its fucking hard man...dunno what it is but i cant to this day sing come as you are and sing it at the same time
if In Utero was a hint of things to come then we mised out on alot of great tunes...and Kurt hadnt even tapped Grohl's songwriting ability at that point
Re: Great Axl & Kurt article
Heart Shaped Box still gives me chills. From the guitar, vocals, lyrics. Amazing. Ozzy made a good comparison once that Guns N' Roses was The Rolling Stones and Nirvana were The Beatles. I agree with that.
No matter how much I don't like Kurt as a person (I'm sure he had his good points and wasn't an A-Hole all the time), you can't ignore his phenominal talent. The irony is, I think Axl takes a lot more shit for his personal life and doesn't get enough credit for his artistic work than what he deserves. It's the opposite with Kurt. There are some people, even in the media, who guard Kurt's "legacy" or "Image" like he was Christ. Crazy stuff. It boarders cult status. As bad as the Axlites are, the Kurt worshipers are probably worse.
tbh, if you go by what Courtney says and some biographers, Kurt really didn't like Dave Grohl and probably would not have carried on with Nirvana. I think Nirvana's break up was going to happen before he killed himself. He was going to do a solo project with Michael Stype, so who knows where he would have gone. I don't think Kurt could have handled failure, though. I think him offing himself was inevitable.
Re: Great Axl & Kurt article
but if you look at the other side of the coin they say Kurt was going to leave Courtney
"Heavier than heaven" was written in conjuntion/cooperation with courtney love... "Love & Death: the Murder of Kurt Cobain" explores another side of the coin...both are good reads if the subject interests you
aparently "come as you are" is another good one that was supposed to be an official Band Bio of Nirvana with input from Kurt, Krist and Dave...havent read that one yet
then there is the Kurt and Courtney movie documentary that should be watched on the subject...anyway in the grand scheme of things i dont think that Nirvana and GnR were this big huge rivalry that its made out to be

I just want to say that Nirvana's stuff is hard to sing, because there's no singing involved. There's not much of a melody to most of Nirvana's songs, which leaves it difficult to find a rhythm, AND when Kurt did do higher notes, he simply screamed them.
Freddie Mercury is difficult to sing for all the right reasons, Kurt - all the wrong.
With that said, I also want to re-state this isn't a Nirvana bash fest. I loved the guys, even though I thought they all could be self-imporant, egotistical douche bags, that made GN'R and Axl look humbled and nice, even in 1992.
I loved all of Nirvana's albums, with In Utero walking to the finish line as their finest work. I wouldn't say they were better or worse than Soundgarden or Pearl Jam, but I definitely feel AIC were the best of the four.

Did someone in this thread really compare Dave Grohl to John Bonham? Ban him!

Re: Great Axl & Kurt article
Never said Nirvana weren't talented, I just they were the least talented of the Seattle bunch.
