NIKKI SIXX Interviewed During 'Canadian Music Week' (Video) - Mar. 10, 2011
Rock legend, best-selling author, photographer and host of the syndicated radio shows "Sixx Sense" and "The Side Show Countdown" Nikki Sixx discussed his many ventures — including a new book and album, both titled "This Is Gonna Hurt" — in an exclusive interview earlier today (Thursday, March 10) during Canadian Music Week at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Nikki Sixx says "fuck you" to Facebook
Motley Crue bassist uses his CMF Q&A session to point out social-media double standards

BY Liisa Ladouceur   March 11, 2011 12:03

Why did Nikki Sixx post half-naked Polaroids of himself and his girlfriend romping in their Royal York hotel room on Wednesday night to his Facebook and Twitter pages? No, he wasn’t trying to pull a Tommy Lee. According to the L.A. rocker’s celebrity interview at the Royal York Thursday morning, it was his way of saying "fuck you" to Facebook, which has been giving him grief over posting images from his upcoming photography book to his personal page.

Sixx’s book This Is Gonna Hurt contains Joel-Peter Witkin-style portraits of a diverse collection of misfit subjects some might call freaks (including hot ladies who just also happen to be obese or amputees, etc.), some in various states of undress. After uploading previews onto his Facebook page, Sixx was informed he had violated the site’s community standards, and if he continued to post his account would be deleted—a situation he shared with his more than 120,000 Twitter followers. In one tweet, he revealed the controversial nude breasts in question were actually those of a transgendered man in transition. (More of the photos can be previewed in the music video for “The Lies of the Beautiful People,” the first single from the forthcoming album by Sixx’s latest band, Sixx A.M.)

In the hour-long conversation with Jeff Woods, Sixx talked a lot about technology and social media. He joked about the proliferation of cameraphones at concerts (“You think, maybe I shouldn’t jump from that speaker to that speaker, because I don’t want to be on YouTube as dumb-ass of the week, who didn’t make it.”) He also admitted he used to really love MySpace and had initially resisted joining Facebook because “It didn’t seem creative enough.”

“I was only really using Twitter," he says, "doing what everybody does, sending text messages out in the world. I was enjoying the positive messages. So I decided to join Facebook. I uploaded a couple of my photos because, for me at the time, there wasn’t anywhere I could have a gallery and talk about that. The photos were deleted.  And I was sent notices telling me to not do that again. So, of course, I did that again.”

Sixx is a model celebrity Tweeter. His followers are privy not only to his official PR messages but also where he eats Indian, when he’s going to the Lakers game, what he’s listening to, plus the occasional hint at private sexcapades or the odd frustrated rant. And he regularly tweets back.

So he’s amassed a loyal legion. After the cover art to the new Sixx A.M. single—featuring a Nikki-shot photo of a model whose face is severely scarred on one side—was removed from his Facebook, tens of thousands of his fans changed their profile pics to the artwork as a show of solidarity. Sixx says it was "a pretty nice fuck you,” even if many of them were also later removed.

What troubles Sixx most about all of this is the seeming double-standard of Facebook allowing semi-pornographic snaps of young people while removing art he feels is spreading a positive message about loving yourself. (He’s also wondered if David Bowie’s Diamond Dogs album art would be allowed in 2011.)

“I wanted to reach out to Mark Zuckerburg but I decided to post some half-naked photos of myself up last night instead, since they’re allowing teenagers [to do that] on there. I’m an adult. And they don’t seem to have a problem with that. So I’m very confused.

"We’re at an interesting situation. I’m saying, 'What’s up with Facebook?' But at the same time I’m using Facebook. I’m not complaining about technology, I’m just bringing a point out. Where are we going with this technology?”

Facebook Account Deletion Lawsuit
The capricious handling of Internet accounts should be a concern, not a standard.  All internet account issues, problems or terminations should be reviewed with professional care and consistency.  These things have not been the priority with Facebook, Inc.  Rather, people of all walks of life have been subjected to automated response messages that depict a lack of personal review of their account situations and total indifference.  In my efforts to support the field of cancer research and cancer patients, I myself was subjected to this type of arrogance and disregard.  Consequently, meaningful relationships have been unnecessarily hurt and individuals have been left to think that they were intentionally deleted from online communication.
I believe that it is not only important but long overdue for people to speak up.  Please feel free to post any comments or personal experiences you may have about your specific account experiences.  I submitted a lawsuit to address this on behalf of myself and all those I have truly cared about.  It is currently being heard in the Santa Clara Northern District Court of California.  There is currently a second amended complaint scheduled to be ruled on March 18th, 2011 and court appointed mediation scheduled on March 23rd. There is also outstanding consideration pending for a possible class action status.
