Re: *RUMOR* Possible GnR one-off reunion for Superbowl XLVI?
I think another angle besides the obvious Slash vs. Axl is would Izzy even go for it? This doesn't seem like Izzy's cup of tea.
Izzy has already said he would be up for it and one of the reasons he cited is, "I wrote a good deal of those songs." Damn right Izzy. It's not a reunion without him. End of fucking story.

Give me the five or nothing. Izzy would be down.

I dunno I think it's quite similar in a lot of ways.
I'm not saying they're exactly the same.
But I mean MJ had undeniable musical/dancing/showman ship ability and it made him into an absolute superstar.
However, then music tastes moved on somewhat, and meanwhile his excentric antics got progressively wierder each year, despite his talent his look became the butt of jokes, he was thought of as a bit of a wierdo - and then accused of a bunch of stuff that made many people think he was pretty much the one thing 99% of the planet hates most - pedophiles.
Then you have Axl.
He has undeniable talent in the rock field. Great frontman, distinctive unique and powerful voice, and helped write a few classics with undeniable long term value - like Sweet Child of Mine. He became a huge star back in the day.
However, musical tastes moved away a little from the UYI style huge production and big video clips, he's the butt of some people's jokes visually, either due to his dress sence/hair (when he was wearing gangster stuff) or his weight these days, and he's now considered by many to be a bit of a wierdo - going underground for years, history of violent outbursts etc - and a lot of people think of him as an asshole for his antics.
When push came to shove, there were comments about MJ being wierd - but people still new he was talented - and could forgive that stuff - even the claims of child abuse - when it was time for a comeback.
I think it's the same with Axl - he's always going to be considered abnormal and people are going to make smart ass remarks about him and shit - but when push comes to shove - if he comes up with more good music he can be forgiven.
I mean obviously MJ was at an even greater level of exposure than Axl originally...but I think the music world is fickle. They'll turn on you just as fast as they love you. But when they feel like it, they'll also forgive anything.
I get that this is a GnR site and people will like Axl more than MJ (in general), but MJ was bigger at his lowest than Axl was at his highest.
The only way Axl will be forgiven is if there is a reunion. Outside of that, the general population just isn't interested.

For individuals yes. For pop music overall, it's the Beatles, Elvis, MJ, and then everyone else.

No arguement about who was bigger.
I just think it's a similar situation. Both very famous, both loved and hated, both considered wacky etc.
Mj was bigger but they both have some cross over. Most metal fans who hate pop would know the odd MJ tune like Billy Jean or whatever, and I think a lot of people who HATE rock/metal music would casually know November Rain or Sweet Child.
It's not the same situation. But it's not completely disimilar - although it would be on a smaller scale for axl.
Obviously reunion would have the most impact on the most people. But I disagree that CD was "his one shot" at making a viable modern GNR.
Nothing will ever get as big as UYI days...but I don't see any indication Axl wants that either. But if he recorded a new album with a solid line up, and it had some good rock songs, and then it was marketed and promoted properly by the band I think the press would eat it up anyway. Just as they do slash's solo stuff, and just as they give airtime to guys like Ashba. I just think the idea that he gets to release one album then it's straight to the unemployment line is sort of fanciful at Axl's level. His priors in a famous band will always get him a degree of attention.

The Rolling Stones deserves a place on that list as well, even if it's mostly due to longevity (although personally I think their catalouge kills everything of the above mentioned). Pushing 70 and still packing stadiums worldwide without a true hit record for 35 years, yeah, they're contenders alright.

I think the issue was record sales. Stones aren't even close to those three.
