MATT SORUM Talks To VINTAGE ROCK About VELVET REVOLVER Singer Search (Video) - Jan. 20, 2011
Junkman of Vintage Rock conducted an interview with VELVET REVOLVER/ex-GUNS N' ROSES drummer Matt Sorum at this past weekend's NAMM (National Association Of Music Merchants) show at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California. You can now watch the chat below.

When asked about the current status of VELVET REVOLVER, Sorum said, "VELVET REVOLVER is always going on...but it's not going on. [laughs]"

He added, "We're just gonna keep saying we might have a [new] singer, and we'll see if we can do it as long as [GUNS N' ROSES singer] Axl [Rose] did making that record ['Chinese Democracy']. If we keep sayin' it, we're thinking we'll be, like, 65 years old by the time [the next VELVET REVOLVER album] comes out."

He continued, "Yeah, we're working on [finding a replacement for vocalist Scott Weiland]. I liked the guy we tried out last week, and I went and opened my mouth. And I said something like, 'yeah, we're gonna make a decision.' I really liked him, but that was me going, I like him. But there's another guy that's got to make a decision — it's a group consensus, we're partners. So we can't say yet. But in the meantime, I'm real busy."

Sorum posted in recent days that VELVET REVOLVER has demoed nine new songs with the mystery vocalist, while both he and guitarist Slash have hinted that an announcement about the singer and the band's future will come sometime this month.

Sorum recently gave The Pulse Of Radio a few more clues about the singer VELVET REVOLVER is currently looking at. "He's a guy that we've had our eye on but the timing wasn't right," he said. "You know, we don't like stealing people. Weiland was available, you know, he was out of STP. It wasn't like we went and said, 'Hey, dude...' Similar situation with this particular individual. It's cool because we're feeling the guy's work ethic is similar to ours, like, when we mean business, we mean business. We're not gonna dabble in it."

So basicly it sounds like they just don't agree on a singer...like one of them likes one, and then someone else doesn't.

I'll be interested to hear that Cherie Currie album, from what Matt said, there is an unused VR track on there.

Or Duff n Matt vs Slash

A vindictive Slash could nix VR if he did not get his way about Myles!  Purely speculation on my part.

Yeah, I think it's Slash. He was the one who put it in limbo saying that they had a bunch of guys running for the position and not only one. So it's not like dating someone, but rather getting a bunch of blow-jobs regularly from different girls while still 'looking for' The One.

Yeah or even if not vindictive almost just out of human nature, he clearly likes myles so it would be hard not to be measuring up the next guy against him.

But it's definately slash putting the breaks on this one it seems.

I dunno, I mean I'd rather wait years and get someone kickass than have them just rush it pick a dud. But at the same time it does worry me that it's turning into a side project. I mean when slash records Slash2 - you can kiss the next 18 months off to touring again.

The thing that scares me is the recepie it's like:

1. They tend have personality disagreements about who to choose.
2. They only get around to actually auditioning for a few weeks once every year or two.
3. They're looking for someone who is equal to Axl and Scott, yet brings his own style but can do exisiting material well. They're may be people like this, but they're few and far between and often already spoken for.

That starts to look like a nearly impossible situation to me. But then they have such chemestry I want them to continue!

They shouldn't make a permanent decision about a singer, if it's this hard and they aren't sure about it in the long-run. Just get a guy they really like for one album, then see how it goes. They can change the singer album by album, it could work.

I'm not sure about the Myles theory, now that Slash as a solo artist has its on glory and fanbase he may prefer to have it seperate to VR. If VR tank with Myles that fall out may affect the Myles & Slash work.
If he was clever he would preserve that collaboration for himself and work VR with another singer. No harm done to 'Slash II' if the whole thing fails.

Good Point. It's kind of a built in insurance for him...whatever happens he can now do follow up albums, so makes sense to keep it seperate.

I just wonder if there's too many personality issues in the band, like last time they played they ended up relapsing and stuff, then couldn't agree on a singer for a very long time...seems like the writing process has been a bit suspect for a while too.
