Take a look at this clip. A good band can elevate a mediocre song and make a great one a classic. The intro to RQ is wicked cool, with Frank's soulful drumming and Ashba's screeching intro. The last solo is barely listenable in comparison, throwing in everything and the kitchen sink with a guitar wall nearly drowning everything in discord.
Or so it seemed.
That's when I thought the current live band definitely have a chemistry among them to perform RQ the way as I like it. That's how I'd expect to hear a proficient band arrange a 2011 cover version. They also do the Axl way of polishing forever, which is the suffocated last half of the entire song. More guitar, more noise. Never embracing the solo instrument, not giving anything front and centre; 'chaotic' sprang to mind.
I'm confident this band would have the combined song-writing prowess to write a solid, groovy album with shades of funk and metal. It wouldn't be GNR in terms of Slash, but it would be a whole lot of fun. Quick-moving, easy listening.
The only thing I fear that might ruin the album would be Axl.

Ron plays the song awesome, they way it should be. DJ however, man, he always skips more difficult passages to the Slash's solos... Axl was on fire in that clip.
Lesson for DJ.. Man, Axl on top of this, would be perfect.

There's nothing wrong with either version other than Axl and Slash aren't playing it together. While I prefer the Axl vocals, Miles does fine and you could make a case for him actually hitting the notes better than Axl. While the band is fine in the GnR version, it doesn't have the same "feel" that it does when Slash is playing it.
On a side note - I checked out the rest of the itunes set from Slash, and I'm not at all impressed with the bass player. Really made me appreciate Duff and his tone/feel for the VR songs especially.

I thought the same thing when I caught them live. Myles sang the songs great, slash was shredding out the solos better than on the record - it was killer - but there was a noticable absence of duff.

I'm a huge myles fan since going to a few shows, but I think the area Axl has over him is the passion of the peformance, in relation to those particular songs.
They both hit those super high notes, but myles does it with a clean tone, whereas Axl tends to do it in that screaching rasp that carries so much anger and emotion to the song.
Both fantastic singers.

Well they are Axl's songs. In any event, I'm not sure why anyone is comparing a studio Myles performance with a live Axl performance. Compare studio vs. studio or live vs. live and it's an ass whipping by Axl in either case, but at least they are being compared on the same grounds. Myles is very good when he sings his own songs, but no one can sing Axl's songs like Axl -- not even the best tribute singers.
