i'm not going to argue that because everyone has their own opinions on that subject, but i will say that Slash agrees with me. in his book, he mentions hanging with Joe Perry or the other guys from Aerosmith back in the 80's and he says something about being disappointed and/or losing respect for them because PV was the first album they hired outside writers to write their songs for them. and i agree 100% with Slash.

Interesting...yeah a lot of people feel that Aerosmith changed their character when they started using outside writers and the band lost its balls and street cred. To be honest I'm only a casual fan of aerosmith, I enjoy them, but I came late in the game, so i'm not really qualified to know if such claims are true...but a lot of people seem to say it.

In relation to Axl, I would agree if he started putting out Beyonce style music or something. But i've noticed that anything he works on he really makes his own.

For example think of the songs he's outright not been a songwriter on - the covers - Knocking on Heaven's Door, Since I Don't Have You -  Live and Let Die - even Hair of the Dog - to me he brought his personality to those peformances so much that they fit in as a GNR track as much as anything he actually wrote.

So, assuming he brings his trademark intensity, sound and creative approach to any collaboration, I think they would actually write something impressive together. Like if they co-wrote. Desmond writes melodies that stick in the mind, that are catchy. So you take that basis and add Axl's authenticity in his struggles, and his abilities with melody also, and it's the basis for a classic song I think. It might become famous, but I don't think it would come out neutered or Axl wouldn't do it. I think whoever he co-writes, or even with covers, he seems to bring that Axlness...and I don't think this would be an exception.

Anyway, although we disagree, I totally respect your post as well, there is something sweet  about songwriting being kept internal in a band generally, so i get where you are comming from.

Another article that vanished was regarding Lionel Richie contributing to a CD track(Seven?). It was more than likely bullshit but is an example of how articles regarding the saga vanish into thin air.

Couldn't believe no one asked Axl about the rumor during those chats.

Its not just Axl, a few years ago I found a couple of links to the Slash interview where he specifically said Axl refused to go on stage unless we signed over the name, it was a small interview with UK tabloids - must have been when on tour with Snakepit. Now I cant find them.

I can tell you with certainty that Lionel Ritchie was not featured in that issue of our publication.

So the interview was fake.

Was the title "down by the sea" leaked before that interview?

Izzy mentioned it in 2001 in an interview with Popular 1 mag but the translation is a little off. Its the only time he's mentioned it to date.

This is going waaaay topic...but all this talk about rumours and so on...

it reminds me years ago I read a rumour about Axl working on a cover of "Total Eclipse of the Heart" with whichever popdiva it is that was around at the time, was Christina or Pink or someone....pretty sure it's 100000% bullshit...

but the funny thing is...everytime I hear that old song now....I can't help but imagine Axl doing it with his full rasp....and the paino.....imagine the FULL gnr novemember rain live style treatment with this song....

I know it sounds crazy, but I think a GNR version of this would kill....wish the rumour had been true.
