After months of rumors it's finally been confirmed — officially — that the Black Eyed Peas will perform during halftime at the 2011 Super Bowl. "They could have picked anybody," will.i.am tells Rolling Stone. "They could rock a million and get Cheap Trick. I love me some Cheap Trick, those motherfuckers is dope. But it says something that they picked us."

The Black Eyed Peas are the first non-classic rock act booked for the halftime show since Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson's infamous "wardrobe malfunction" performance in 2004. "I've been at every single one of them since that," says will.i.am. "The Prince one, the Paul McCartney one, Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen."

Black Eyed Peas' "I Gotta Feeling" Named Bestselling Digital Track

For much of the Super Bowl's history the halftime show was almost an afterthought, often consisting of marching bands and salutes to American icons like Duke Ellington or Louis Armstrong. Michael Jackson performed at the 1993 halftime show, but two years later the show was an incredibly cheesy Indiana Jones skit followed by performances by Teddy Pendergrass, Tony Bennett and the Miami Sound Machine.

In 2001 MTV put on a multi-artist showcase featuring a medley by Aerosmith, N'Sync, Britney Spears, Mary J. Blige and Nelly. After the Janet Jackson debacle the show shifted towards classic rock acts, but after six consecutive years of that organizers clearly felt like it was time for a change.

The Black Eyed Peas are releasing their sixth album The Beginning November 30 and will launch a world tour to support it next year.

Will.i.am Refutes Rumors Fergie Will Quit Black Eyed Peas

Will.i.am has quickly refuted rumors that his relationship with fellow Black Eyed Pea Fergie is strained and that The Duchess singer has plans to leave the group's current leg of The E.N.D. world tour. A story in Radar featuring quotes from unspecified sources reported Fergie is looking to split from the Peas so she can have a baby with husband Josh Duhamel and distance herself from the "bad blood" between herself and Will.ia.m, which was allegedly jeopardizing a planned 2011 tour.

But Fergie won't be leaving Rolling Stone's Number One Reason to Be Excited About Music after all. "Don't believe gossip about Fergie leaving the group (we are never breaking up) its all lies!!!," Will.i.am tweeted emphatically after the Radar report spread. He also spoke to Sirius XM about the breakup rumors, saying "[Fergie] called me today. I talked to her today, I was like, 'So, Fergie is it true that you're leaving?' She was like, 'You're a fucking idiot!' I was like, 'You know I'm just jokin' with you, pulling your leg.' We ain't going anywhere. It's a family. People are reading into our vacation."

In an additional sign of solidarity, the two musicians sat next to each other and conversed warmly during last night's BET Awards in Los Angeles.

Well the sport is "macho", but the event is family oriented.  Billions of people watch it for the commercials and halftime show.  The hardcore football fans could care less about either and would rather just focus on the game, but that ONE game is watched by far more non hardcore football fans than the others.  Thus, the reason for getting "mainstream" acts to perform.

I've liked it a lot better the last couple of years when they "played it safe" with classic rock acts like The Who, The Boss, and Tom Petty, among others.  No fear of any wardrobe malfunctions with those groups.  With Fergie, I'll be wishing for one.  As long as it's not will.I.am.

And my favorite Super Bowl halftime show of all time was (this is for you Bono) U2 in the 2001 season.  It was a few months after 9/11 and they paid a great tribute to all the innocent victims who died on that day.  It was truly a touching moment.  Plus, the Patriots won their first Super Bowl that night and all the montages for that win include "Beautiful Day".

Black Eyed Peas Accused Of Stealing KC and the Sunshine Band Hit
By Paul Cashmere

Harry Wayne Casey of K.C. and the Sunshine Band has accused Black Eyed Peas of ripping off one of his songs for their new album.

"I have recently learned that the Black Eyed Peas have utilized my song 'Give It Up' in their new composition 'Love You Long Time' which appears on their new album," remarks Harry Wayne "KC" Casey.  "I LOVE the Black Eyed Peas and am truly honored that my music has crossed over decades and many types of music genres.  Will.i.am is a great producer and I am thrilled that he is a fan of KC and the Sunshine Band, too."

A media release from Casey says that there is no doubt that ‘Give It Up’ is featured in ‘Love You Long Time’ without authorization or credit.

Casey’s attorney David Bercuson says he is “working on an amicable solution to the legal issues resulting from this situation”.

‘Love You Long Time’ features on the just released Black Eyed Peas album ‘The Beginning’.

Wow, I just listened to the 2 songs and they're QUITE similar.  I mean, we're not talking ambient noise here.

Agreed. I don't why Slash has such a hard on for Fergie.

"uh, but doode u dont understaand, she's hawat!!!!"

No she ain't. Vocally I think Fergie is wonderful. But her music outside of her collabs with Slash, fuckin' blow.

BEP, not only do they have probably the dumbest fucking name ever for any music artist in history, but their music is terrible. And the egos in that group are shocking.

Well for all you tough guys who are too cool for this  I'll add my two cents as I'm likely the only one here who has seen them live(they opend for U2)

Black Eyed Peas were actually really good. The crowd was into them, it was a party atmosphere(which the Super Bowl is) and to be honest it was a lot of fun. I've never seen an opening band get that kind of reaction.  They are a good choice for the Super Bowl. The bands they've had recently have been really good but it's been a tad bit geriatric.  Black Eyed Peas brings the half time show into the current generation's demographic. You can say it sucks all you want but I guarantee you the people in attendence will enjoy it.

I agree. I think it was the best ever as well. Like I said the past few years have been good but it's too old. Even though U2 is an older band the reason they worked so well(other than the fact they're fucking awesome) is they had a recent single(Beautiful Day) that was a #1 across the board. The young and old could identify with them.
