Re: Slash commenting on Duff with GNR
Yeah, it apparently didn't hurt them in 1992 & 1993.
Even then only the diehards noticed Izzy was missing. Hell, how many documentaries referenced Izzy and showed a video of Gilby? Several that i've seen.
Just goes to show how out of the loop, even industry insiders are. It's all the Axl & Slash show, and outside the U.S. it's apparently the Axl-only show.

Re: Slash commenting on Duff with GNR
To the eyes of the general public Slash + Axl = Reunion. You're kidding yourself if you think otherwise.
That's true. While I would be very happy to see those bastards finally bury the hatchet, it's not Guns N' Roses without Izzy in my book. He wrote too much of the material for it to truly be GN'R without him. That's why I think it was over in 1991 when he left. Certainly when he left, their creativity took a massive nosedive even if they stayed on the road and delayed the inevitable for as long as possible.
Re: Slash commenting on Duff with GNR
So if they reunited, would they ignore CD? God I hope not. The coolest thing would be for them to approach it like Soundgarden has- build excitement, release something to hold everyone over, do some show, hit the studio.
No one thinks Slash can handle Bucket's part- bah. If they wanted to, they could rework alt versions for touring, not because they CAN'T play it, but because they're awesome enough to slap some old-school guns on the new stuff.
I love GNR in any incarnation, but the Grail for me is at LEAST the Big 4. Sorry, but that's who I grew up with. I used to have posters and rock mag pics all over my walls as a kid. I remember the first time I saw GNR- I thought "Who is that disgusting guy with a nipple ring?" It was Axl. It was probably another 6 months before I heard AFD. AFD was one of those rare albums (that at that point I could have counted on one hand with room to grow) that was awesome from start to finish, on the very first listen. Not too many albums can grab you like that, especially before you discover drugs.

Re: Slash commenting on Duff with GNR
The problem with CD as live material is that the album is so overproduced that they cannot replicate it in a live environment, unlike something like Jungle or Nightrain. Hell, even November Rain is easy to replicate live compared to the CD material...and that's saying a lot considering NR is overproduced in its own right.

Re: Slash commenting on Duff with GNR
Street of Dreams, Sorry and This I Love could be done VERY easily.
Those are exceptions to the general rule about that album.
Re: Slash commenting on Duff with GNR
I guess my point is that it's not at all beyond these guys' skill sets to "de-produce" these songs to the point that they've been pretty much reinvented. Not just scaled back, more of a do-over. It's not like plenty of other bands don't do that, and often it's the mark of a truly awesome band to be able to do so. Sometimes, those completely different versions actually become the standard for a given song.
There's not a whole lot off the UYIs that aren't arguably overproduced as well, yet do you think the band truly NEEDED the brass section and backup singers to do them justice? I don't.
Side note- Duff's appearance made me realize one thing that I think IS lacking in the new band- backing vocals that are just as important to the overall sound as any other instrument. It's not that these guys CAN'T sing (I'd be crazy to suggest that), but it really seems that they're not forward enough in the mix or very distinctive.
