I buy it. I don't think Axl practiced or rehearsed hardly at all in those days. He probably didn't even has a vocal coach until Baz warmed him up to the idea.
Funny Baz comes with recommendations and suddenly Axl's voice is back like snapping fingers.
Axl seems egotistical and too proud when it comes to his voice. At least in the early 2000's he was.

His rasp in 2006 wasn't as big as it is now. It's like what Axlin says, it wasn't there in 2002 because he had been out of it for 8 years. However, I am standing by the fact that Axl would have ruined his voice if he had kept going another year in 1993. I don't think he actually CAN control it 100%. Maybe more now than what he did in the 90's, but I don't think he can keep it under control. A male singers voice isn't done by the time you hit 30. In fact, according to one of the best metal singers of all time, Tony Harnell, the voice will actually peak around in the 50's. Just check out opera singers.
