I also can totally relate to it with my upbringing.
The irony is the song proved exactly what Axl was complaining about. Axl's ignorance was a self-recognized ignorance of one who shelters themselves because they don't get it.
The worst kind of ignorance tho is that of the listener who generalized and labeled Axl a racist. Those are the enlightened kind who are the dumbest mother fuckers walking the earth and convinced they've got it all locked down. Those are the scariest kind, and will be what costs us all in the end. The politically correct/censorship fuckers.

Yeah muscially I really like OIAM plus lyrically I thought Axl painted a great picture for me of what he saw literally as a small town white boy straight off the greyhound bus in a big city for the first time.
Perhaps some people didn't like what they saw in the mirror that Axl was holding up.
If OIAM created controvery back then imagine it coming out now in the hypersensitive over the top political correct environment of today!
