Re: Alice's take on Axl
Alice has staunchly defended Axl over the years on his show, I think he still considers him a friend. He has a point I suppose, but the last 15 years has been proof that Axl has done exactly what Alice suggests. When he didnt want to record the album he didnt, and when he didnt want to perform on stage he didnt.

Re: Alice's take on Axl
Yeah, while I love Alice, I do think Axl is still doing what he wants and not just bowing to public pressure.
It's not like he's doing stuff just for the masses - or he'd phone up slash, sing on anything given to him and go through the motions that way, but instead he's got his own band, made CD and is still doing it his own way.
Re: Alice's take on Axl
Well, in Axl's defense, I Don't think he purposely spent 15 years on an album. He did release 4 killer albums in a span of 5 years.
People seriously underestimate how hard it is to put the right band together.
u think replacing the old band is a walk in the park? I'd say it took years just trying to find the right chemistry/players.
Then u have to write songs and i honestly think Axl was just never satisfied with the quality of the material. Don't think it had anything to do with perfectionism, just the material wasn't up to the level it should be. Then u tour in 2002 just to road test the band and make money.. things don't go the way u would like etc and its almost like starting back at square one.
People have this illusion that writing songs is so simple, but remember ,Axl never wrote all the lyrics in the old band. so having to be the sole lyric writer is daunting and it isn't easy writing profound lyrics. Sure its easy writing simple get high/get laid shit... but he was writing from a deep place and u have bouts where u are creative, bouts where u can't think of shit.
so, I give Axl a lot of shit on the forums, but I don't think he has lost his heart or love for it. It takes some courage to continue on with the GNR name knowing US Fans and most people hate u for it.
Re: Alice's take on Axl
I think if it's that difficult to "replace the old band" then he should have figured out he can't replace the old band and it's time to do something different. trying to replace the old band has killed whatever chance Axl had for a successful career after 1996...and by successful career, I mean making a living off of new efforts, not old ones.

Re: Alice's take on Axl
Buzz, it always has been different and that's half why a lot of people didn't like it.
Bucket doesn't play or act anything like Slash on stage, meanwhile Robin didn't even play the solos anything like the originals. And the new tracks, stuff like Oh My God,... Shacklers and so on....well it's not like he set out to record AFD2 is it.
So he pretty much was doing what you said, just under the old name.
I think all D is saying is that the original band (inlcuding Axl) took GNR to a certain level. And it's no easy task to make a new album, with new players, that's at the quality of the original band, the pressure would be insane.
Re: Alice's take on Axl
I find it hard to believe that Axl would be viewed much differently, by those who view him in a negative light, if he dropped the GNR name and just went out on his own back in the mid 90's. You can't tell me the supporters of the band still wouldn't have blamed him for the band breaking up, thus not supporting any future efforts he made.
And I'm not talking specifically about anyone on this board. It's just, I read everywhere about how this band sucks and it's not really GNR. GNR died 15 years ago, all that crap. Then I hear them try to cover it by saying, "I'd respect him so much more if he wasn't using the name". I just don't buy it. People hate Axl for a lot more than just using the GNR name.

Re: Alice's take on Axl
^ I tend to agree, I think that the % of people who are never going to like Axl, would still call for a reunion and it would be like "go back to guns n roses" rather than "this isn't guns n roses". Much like how VR got it's share of fans, but also a bunch of people saying it sucked next to GNR.
Although I do think keeping the name does add aditional venom to most people, as it brings a preset idea of what the band will sound like and so on to the table immediately.
Axl posted in detail about why he kept the name and it's understandable in his situation....however I've often thought one thing steven said was a cool idea. He's said Axl could have gone solo under the name W.A.R - for W. Axl Rose....and I thought that would be cool as not only would it keep the strong branding and image axl has...but it very much sums up how life seems to be in GNR! It's a constant battle in one way or anyother. Anyway...he did what he did...but it was a cool suggestion from steven i thought, all be it 15 years too late.
Re: Alice's take on Axl
Unfortunately these opinions seem to sum up the general publics perceptions of the man. No matter what he does (except a reunion) will be good enough for a lot of people. This vid also shows why they can struggle with a festival crowd where there is a big spread of music fans not just GNR ones.

Re: Alice's take on Axl
Axl doing it "his way" is just his delusional perception that laziness and procrastination is "stickin' it to the man".
use your delusion.
let it take you where it may...
