Re: Reading, United Kingdom - August 27, 2010 (Reading Festival)
I must say it's odd on HTGTH how there's posts from people saying this a great moment for fans.
Situation: Promoter says in advance that show must end on time no matter what. Band goes on an hour late. Show gets cut short early.
Now it may be the case that promoter was looking for a fight with GNR, and that Axl's standing up for his principles, or had some great reason for starting late....but even if one isn't critical of GNR....it's a bit of a stretch to say this is a great moment for a fan. At best it was part of a great show.....at worst it's a concert they paid for with travel expenses thrown in and missed out on the big ending.
I think a good moment for a fan is something like the Asian gigs, where GNR could play for hours unobstructed, they were clearly happy and having a blast, and played lots of Chinese Democracy. That's a good moment.
Re: Reading, United Kingdom - August 27, 2010 (Reading Festival)
The point is that it's a lot of supporters that are blasting this one. people are dropping like flies off the bandwagon. He's been losing us for years now and still either doesn't know or more likely doesn't care.
Re: Reading, United Kingdom - August 27, 2010 (Reading Festival)
Absolutely Buzz. I mean it's a total shame. The people sitting here trying to defend the guy... stop. Just stop man. I say that out of love. The only people left on Axl's side are the ones showing straight up the absolute dick suckers they were for years.
If any of you want to retain your self-respect, get out now, before you further make self-hating sluts of yourselves.

Not that the band isn't at fault, because they are. But the promoter handled this whole thing horribly. Such is life when dealing with a band like Guns N' Roses I guess. It's hard to handle things well. Compare this though to Sturgis, where the organizer came out and took the blame for the late start.
The more I think about this, I don't think it was an ultimatum. I think the guy realised he might have to do it, so he took it public.
Imagine what the outrage would have been when he pulled the plug if no one knew of a possiblility it would happen.
Exactly. Going to the press was to cover his own ass in case of the likely event that GnR fucked him and his event.
GnR put his livelihood and the FANS' festival(s) at risk. The curfew isn't his call. You think he'd pay the enormous fee (a fee that virtually no one in the US is willing to pay) just to pull the plug on GnR to prove a point? 20 songs in?
Stop drinking the kool aid. Axl either was late on purpose, or late because he wasn't professional enough to be bothered doing his job. Either way, this is on him, NOT anyone else.
Give me a break! If you want to save your ass and make sure the band goes on when they're scheduled, there are far better ways to do it then going straight to the press and telling them. Try telling someone associated with the band first.
I realize GNR isn't blameless in this situation, but let's not make the promoters out to be saints here. Ridiculous!

again we dunno exactly what happens but obviously some peopel are in one camp and others are in the other
There's only one camp Neemo. Axl broke curfew so they cut his set short. End of Story. It's on nobody else but Axl. Late start, long set who cares. He broke the curfew nobody else. If people are in the camp that thinks the promoters are somewhat at fault then I think those people have lost their grasp on reality.
Lump me in with the group that have lost their grasp on reality.

Honestly Faldor this is such a stupid fucking naive comment I can't believe you even said it. You honestly think that the promoters never had the discussion with Gn'R or it's management? Dude c'mon give your heada shake man. The promoter obviously went to the press knowing full well what might happen. By puting it out there EVERYONE knew the consequences and EVERYONE was in the know of what was allowed and what wasn't. The only person to blame is Axl fucking Rose for thinking he was above the law. The guys is a douche and it's laughable that some of you defend him or even try to deflect the blame or part of the blame onto others. We ALL knew what the deal was yet the only one stupid enough to think it was a bluff was the douchebag singer himself.
Also let's not forget the fact this was obviously staged by Axl/Gn'R to gain some media coverage or create buzz. So fucking weak form a band that use to be spontanious and combustable is now a fucking characacher of itself. Intentionally trying to create a badass image. Wow! whata fucking laugh

I don't know if they had the discussion with GNR management, no. I assume they'd be smart enough to do so. But even IF they did, there's still no reason to go blab to the press that "if they don't go on when they're supposed to, we'll pull the plug." There's really no excuse for that in my mind. I'm sorry. Call me what you will.
For comparisons sake. Tony Dungy recently blasted Rex Ryan for his use of foul language to his team on the "Hard Knocks" show on HBO. Rex took offense to those comments and wouldn't you know the very next episode the expletives were flying more than normal. Listen, you push someone who might not be the most stable of human beings, you know there's a good chance it might not end up in your favor.
So yes, I do put some blame on the promoter.
And thanks for pointing out my "stupid fucking naive comment". You got any more for me? I'll take it as long as you can dish it my friend.
Re: Reading, United Kingdom - August 27, 2010 (Reading Festival)
As usually when things go a little tits up, the haters on here come out guns blazing...
Haters, lol...what an immature way of looking at things. Let me say something, that very few people ever say on these forums. The notion that I must hold one opinion or another on this band is ridiculous. I love GNR, and have been a fan for 24 yrs now. But does that also mean I am not welcome to voice my displeasure of what I feel is Axl's lack of professionalism as a performer? Who made this inane unspoken rule that we all must abide by no matter which forum we visit? We can only be "For Axl" or "Against Axl", there is no middle ground (which is where most people stand in the real world, regardless of the subject.)
There are aspects I may like about a person, and others personality traits I do not. However this does not mean I don't want to be their friend, it simply means I won't invite them over for dinner anymore because they are always late and ruin the party.
I don't see why this is such a difficult concept to grasp for the GNR community as a whole, and frankly it makes so many of them look downright childish. Yes I love GNR. No I don't like the way Axl acts as a person sometimes. Yes I loved the new band for nearly a decade and was a huge supporter of that incarnation. No I don't like them as much as the old band anymore. Yes I can't wait to see GnR in concert again. No I don't think it's cool to make me wait. On and on and on....Not a tough concept.
People may have different opinions than you, however that does not negate their right to express them simply because you deem them "Haters." Why can't a fan express their discontent with how a band or band member carried themselves? Why should anybody have to adhere to this stupid rule put forth by a group of zealots (ummm, nerds) anyway? I can't think of anything less rock n' roll then playing along with a bunch of forum dweebs as not to upset their little world.
/end rant
