AAA..Natalie Portman was in the running, but lost on her chance to play the role of the binge-drinking, bisexual Lisbeth Salander - a lead role in what had been one of the most recently sought after jobs in Hollywood - with the likes of Ellen Page, Natalie Portman and Emma Watson among those reportedly up for it.
NFL scion and up-and-coming actress Rooney Mara yesterday scored the role of her young lifetime when studio bigwigs tabbed her to play the lead in "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo."
The great-granddaughter of Giants founder Tim Mara and Pittsburgh Steelers founder Art Rooney will star opposite Daniel Craig in the English-language remake of the popular book and film franchise, Sony Pictures announced.
Mara, 25, is a relative newcomer to Tinseltown, with TV credits on "ER" and "Law & Order: SVU." Her biggest films have been "Youth in Revolt," this year's remake of "A Nightmare on Elm Street," and the upcoming sports comedy "The Winning Season."
Shooting on "Dragon" begins next month in Sweden and the flick is due out Dec. 21, 2011. Mara will play a genius researcher/computer hacker tormented by childhood memories. She helps journalist Mikael Blomquist (007 heartthrob Craig) solve a string of murders.
Robin Wright will play Blomquist's occasional lover, magazine editor Erika Berger.
The director is David Fincher, who worked with Mara in "The Social Network," about the founders of Facebook due out this fall.
"Dragon" is based on the first in a trilogy of novels by the late Swedish journalist Stieg Larsson that have sold more than 27 million copies in 40 countries.
"We are thrilled for Rooney's opportunity to play such an iconic character as Lisbeth Salander," her parents, Kathleen and Chris Mara, said in a statement.
"It is very satisfying for her and us as parents when all the hard work finally pays off. That being said, there's a lot of responsibility that comes with such a big role, but we believe she has what it takes."

Usually I'm anti-remake (especially on foreign films) but the original was extremely boring when compared to the back. I'm looking forward to what Fincher and Craig can bring to this series.
Too bad because there would have been some full frontal nudity with Natalie Portman. Oh well, I think she already did a nude scene a few years ago for a short Wes Anderson film.
