Re: New Soundgarden best of or new album?
It's a decent tracklist. There's some glaring omissions for me tho, like Searching With My Good Eye Closed, Mind Riot, New Damage, Like Suicide, Overfloater, Boot Camp...
Once again, Down on the Upside was virtually ignored except for its subpar singles(although Blow Up is pretty solid). Throwing Dusty on there makes no sense and if you're gonna do it, put that Moby remix on there as an added incentive.
That single CD track list is fucking atrocious and an embarrassment. I think they did that on purpose to get people to buy the deluxe edition.
This should have truly been a "Best of" and not the hits with a few songs that were practically hits. Why in the fuck is Nothing To Say not on this? One of the tracks that played a role in getting them noticed. It was even played at the 3/4th reunion gig.
You're not a huge fan but you have a good eye(pardon the pun) on what should have been on there...
Here's what I would have compiled....I know you gotta have the big hits but their discog is so strong that the sky is the limit with everything else. Stop playing it safe. Playing it safe totally goes against the essence of the band.
Disc One....
Hunted Down
Nothing to Say
Toy Box
FOPP
Flower
Mood for Trouble
Beyond the Wheel
Room A Thousand Years Wide *Sub Pop Version which in on this GH set*
Hands All Over
Big Dumb Sex
Full On Kevin's Mom
No Wrong No Right
Earache My Eye (live)
Birth Ritual (demo)
Disc Two.....
*This is where it gets tricky because the quality is so strong and only a minimal amount of filler on the next three albums*
Rusty Cage
Outshined
Jesus Christ Pose
Searching With My Good Eye Closed
Spoonman
My Wave
Fell On Black Days (video version)
Black Hole Sun
Superunknown
4th of July
Blow Up the Outside World
Ty Cobb
Overfloater
Boot Camp
Black Rain
----------
Can anyone honestly say my track list is worse than theirs? I know someone can jump in and say, "but you're leaving off singles on disc 2". Well, they left off one of their only singles in the early years on disc one, so I can do the same with the stronger disc. For the record, that is not the "Lofton wet dream" track list. I tried to make a true representation of the band in two albums. As you know, some of my all time favorite songs from the band are Head Down, Fresh Tendrils, Never the Machine Forever, Half, Mind Riot, Drawing Flies, etc. but they wouldn't really work in an effort to encompass what they are on two albums. The material is just too strong and you have to include the big hits from Superunknown so it prevents a lot of deep cuts from being included.
New Damage
Keep your eye on my daily dose of Soundgarden thread as one of the coming downloads will be the version of New Damage recorded with Brian May in 1994. It's great quality too.
That should get your juices flowing.
Re: New Soundgarden best of or new album?
James, your track list is way better. However, replace Full on Kevin's Mom with Loud Love and you're golden.
No way should it include Dusty. A better choice would have been Ty Cobb, or Overfloater, not Dusty.
Also, the only version of Beyond the Wheel that should be included is the one from Louder than Live, which is a far superior track than the studio version. That song back then live had way more energy and sounded way more imposing than the studio.
Kinda disappointed, but I'll buy it anyway.

Did you know Terry Date is producing Duff`s next album?

Always wondered what Superunknown would have sounded like with him. Soundgarden intentionally went in a different direction so got rid of him. Superunknown is amazing but it definitely has a grungy sound(for obvious reasons) to it which the previous albums lacked. Date seems to have considered them a metal band and approached it with that mindset.

They're crazy if they let all this cool artwork go to waste.
That's some damn cool artwork.
Soundgarden have my full attention now. I'm eagerly awaiting whatever they throw at us next.

The inclusion of Black Hole Sun makes me think this was a warm up for the Lolla set. Awesome to include Head Down and 4th of July. Glaring omission would be Hands All Over. Song is even more relevant now.
Face Pollution the shocker. Talk about digging a bit too deep into Badmotorfinger.
