Soundgarden's 'Telephantasm' gets 'Guitar Hero' welcome

By Mike Snider, USA TODAY
Reunited rock band Soundgarden, which is playing Lollapalooza Sunday, has lined up another gig already: Guitar Hero.
Telephantasm: A Retrospective, the band's first CD in 13 years, will be packaged with initial shipments of the Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock game (out Sept. 28 for PS3, Wii and Xbox 360, rated T for ages 13-up, $60-up.)

This is the first time a retail music CD has been packaged with a video game, and it's one week before the same CD hits stores Oct. 5. (Three expanded versions of Telephantasm, including a two-CD/DVD/three-vinyl-disc set, will be out Sept. 28.)

Last year, Activision packaged a two-CD compilation of hits from Jay-Z and Eminem with the game DJ Hero. Telephantasm includes Soundgarden's Grammy-winning hits Black Hole Sun and Spoonman, as well as a previously unreleased song, Black Rain. That song is also among the 90-plus songs playable in Warriors of Rock; the rest of the Telephantasm tracks can be purchased and downloaded immediately for playing in the game.

Soundgarden lead singer Chris Cornell expects the Guitar Hero relationship to help reintroduce the band to listeners; its music, once a staple of college and alternative radio as well as MTV, hasn't been prominent since Soundgarden's breakup in 1997. "There are a lot of different ways to get your music out (and) ... this clearly to me is one way to do that," Cornell says. "Guitar Hero has actually turned on a lot of young music fans to music that they otherwise might not have ever heard."

Another high note: Telephantasm will officially go platinum (1 million copies) when the game ships. And Telephantasm's immediate availability as downloadable game content "is a recognition from the music industry that we are a platform for digital distribution," says Guitar Hero chief operating officer David Haddad.

Eleven of the 12 Telephantasm songs have appeared on previous releases, including early independent and small-label albums. "It is pretty much (our) greatest hits," says drummer Matt Cameron. Black Rain, which was recorded during sessions for the 1991 album Badmotorfinger, captures "that super heavy version (of the band) we were finally realizing to its fullest potential about 1991," Cornell says.

Beyond Lollapalooza and the new CD, Soundgarden is taking its return day-to-day. "I think our goal now is to do what we always wanted to do, which is to '” at our own pace and in our own time '” just do what we want when we want to do it," Cornell says. "Whether it's shows, songs, whatever it might be, records, we'll know when we get there."

So just the 1 new song then...

Major bummer. I'm gonna buy it regardless because if this sells it increases the likelihood of that vault being opened. I also understand the need to go back to the GH well as a lot of people have forgot about them. A GH set will be a great reminder, especially for casual fans. I had major issues with A sides even though its exactly what it said it was..... A sides. A 2 disc set will allow a proper best of collection to be on the market.

Sucks that Black Rain is the only new song on the set but beggars cant be choosers. Just have to consider it a taste of the coming feast.

Okay... so I guess the radio interview I heard in Seattle with Ben saying Black Rain was from Superunknown sessions was bullshit?  Weird...

He could have been right and wrong. 16 Song may have originated during Badmotorfinger, worked on more during Superunknown, then it got scrapped. Room a Thousand Years Wide was from the early days of the band but they didn't actually do something spectacular with it until Badmotorfinger.

If they ever record a new album, I would not be surprised if some of the tracks are finalized versions of demos we've heard.

Good point.  I guess when these songs were worked on over two decades ago it can become difficult to remember exactly where they originated from.

We obviously have way less than perfect information on this.  No mention whatsoever about what the second disk is.  And there are 4 different versions of it?  Three deluxe ones and a regular?

The Guitar Hero packaging is a wonderful idea to bring Soundgarden back to the masses.  9

I'd like to have Telephantasm anyway, because for me, Soundgarden is a "compilation" band. So is Pearl Jam & Nirvana.

Only with AIC am I a full catalog guy...

No longer excited. We just got worst case scenario handed to us on a silver platter. I have everything on that and the vids I don't have, I've seen them.

I'll give em props for including that video version of Fell On Black Days.

I'll have to dig and see if I have Flower from the BBC session. Even if I don't, its not really a selling point for this.

Black Rain the only selling point for this and I don't know how much that's gonna help since everyone is gonna have that song before this is released.

I think they screwed the pooch with this song selection. I'm gonna buy it to support them, but I wont be happy doing it.

This is clearly being catered to a casual audience. They need to unload that box set for the hard cores.
