Re: Poltergeist Remake
I'm reading the script right now. It's actually pretty damn good. A couple tiny missed opportunities, but this is just a first draft...
Some things:
Carol Ann is now called Sophie.
The eldest daughter is a closeted lesbian.
No evil tree... Thank God.
I'll post some more spoiler stuff in the posts below
once I'm done.
But good so far.
Re: Poltergeist Remake
I'll have to finish the rest later. Thoughts so far... Not any real spoilers.
The mom is almost raped by a poltergeist.
It's missing the moments the mom and dad had alone together, like smoking pot in the original and its really missed here.
The webcam on the TV bit is a perfect fit in this story. Creepy. Wish it was used more.
The scene in the original when Carol Ann's spirit runs through her mother was so, so, so much better.
Re: Poltergeist Remake
Okay, there's a twist on the ending (which is pretty clever) but I'm not going to reveal it... Unless you want it spoiled and ask. It's a pretty cool concept, but the execution left me feeling a little flat. Like you'd see it in any other Hollywood horror film. It could have been much, much darker. And much more scarier. Kind of how they missed a big opportunity with Constantine to make it a really horrorfying film.
The midget psychic has been replaced by an "ethereal" 20 year old chick... Meaning she's hot. But she's really barely in the story. No "This house is clear." And for that matter, even though its kind of hinted at, we never hear "They're heeerrreeee." Which is a bad mistake, imo. It's a remake. It's like remaking JAWS and leaving out "We need a bigger boat!" or remaking Terminator without "I'll be back."
There's also a nice spin on the guy who looks at his reflection and his face peels apart... It's more realistic, but again, it could have been a completely horrifying scene, but they missed the boat. It seems they didn't have the balls to carry it out... Or they just didn't know what to do with it.
Again, a lot was missed from the mom and dad relationship, which was so fantastic in the original. So many missed opportunities here.
I really didn't think turning the sister into a lesbian was really necessary other than making the characters more "modern." But there's a really good moment when she thinks her secret "badness" is what brought the haunting on the family. I thought it was written really well.
And they introduced a police detective into the story that I didn't think would work at all, but it totally did. I wish they could have done more with him.
Overall, I'd would put it on par with I Am Legend. Not saying its bad, or not good. Beacuse it is good, in its current form at least. But it could've been so much better.
Re: Poltergeist Remake
Sounds like a major turd to me. I always thought it was overrated and while a good story, making it dark could have really upped the ante on the Poltergeist concept.
Sounds like a retread with crap(lesbo trash) to appeal to audiences in this day and age. I wont be watching it.
Re: Poltergeist Remake
tbh, the lesbian thing is so subtle that I'd bet some people would miss it. I mean it's there, and its pretty obvious what she's hiding and wants her parents to know, but its nothing in your face or gratuitous. I actually think they did a good job with it.
My main problem with the script:
1 - parents relationship is too thin.
2 - The ending was a bummer when it could have been soooo terrifying.
Let The Right One In is my favorite vampire film (from Sweden) and I read the American Let Me In remake... And it's even BETTER. So there's still hope yet for some remakes.
On the other hand, I'll be reading the Fright Night remake script soon. Tried before but couldn't get past the first few pages. And that was my favoite horror films of the 80's.

Re: Poltergeist Remake
remakes are shit. leave these great movies alone please!!!!! frustrating
Re: Poltergeist Remake
I know they pop up on horror fansites, and stuff.
I used to be a big Halloween nutswinger, and followed it pretty solidly from Halloween 6 on through Zombie's first Halloween.
There's always some fanboy who leaks a script, always. I'm sure a popular franchise like Poltergeist is no different.
Re: Poltergeist Remake
Nah, the scripts I have come right from the studios.
Forgive me for not being familiar enough to know this, but where do you get these scripts to read, misterID? Are you in the biz, or is there someplace I could go to read them too?
If there's a script you want to read of any upcoming movie let me know and I'll see if I have it. I've got tons.
