Yeah, sadly it's gotten ten times worse. Even Axl probably weeps reading that site.

Those cats over there seriously need to find something to do with their time. Go back to school, get a girlfriend, join the peace corps, pick up a drug habit - SOMETHING.

Ironically so did mine. I had heard about the Rio III show, and I knew there was a new band, but I didn't follow them all that much, except for the occasional RS story about CD.

The VMA performance started my fanboy, daily dedicated following. Before that it was just still trying to convince the world the Use Your Illusion albums were the best thing in the 90's.

Yeah, I'm in the same exact boat.  Damn them!  We were almost out!  They had to drag us back in for this 8 year odyssey!

The VMAs killed it for me.  I was totally ready to give Axl a chance and then I saw the freak show.  I know image shouldn't matter, but THAT was not Guns N Roses.  It was a circus, and from then on, in my mind, the band no longer existed.  That was the official start of the Axl Rose solo project in my mind.

They actually did okay with the AFD songs, but Madagascar was so bad that I gave up on the band ever doing anything I liked.  So they looked like freaks, played the old stuff okay, and had a horrible song in the middle.  A lot of people saw the same thing I saw...nothing Axl could have done after that would have saved it - I don't care how good CD was.

I know a lot of you hold out hope for 2002, but it wasn't going to happen.  Fair or not, that moment was the only chance they ever had and they blew it.  That's what I thought then, and I still feel that way today.

Revisionist history, Buzz. It was considered a fiasco AFTER the fact. That was the biggest buzz the band had since UYI. He blew it alright, but not because it was a "freak show". He blew it because he was too chickenshit to capitalize on the buzz and release the album.

I do agree that it was pretty much obvious after the wheels came off a few months later that any legitimate attempt at a comeback just wasn't happening. It was pipe dream city from that point forward.

Not saying you're lying about not liking it. I can see why some wouldn't like it. Good or bad, the whole world was talking about it and that was the moment to strike as the iron would never get that hot again.

Yes, Madagascar sucked and the medley was one of THE dumbest moves in the band's history. They should have performed Better or the title track.

Axl sounded so awful during that performance.  I had 10 of my friends over, taped the fucking thing, built the shit up cause I had "inside information" they were playing... They all laughed at his has, it was awful...  And then all said, "its not gnr without Slash"...

the band sounded fine, Axl sounded terrible. Honest to God, he just looked so nervous. Watch it again. He is tight.

To James' point, the buzz was still huge after that. If the album comes out and then they do the US Tour, things could have been a little bit better. I still think after Rio 2001 (that summer) was the time. It is all meaningless now. Reality is reality and you can only hope he tries to do it different "next" time.

for the guy that wrote this, I hope he still thinks about these lines today. I do and this verse still inspires me from time to time....probably why I will always be a fan. So basic, so true. Honest self reflection.

"When I find out all the reasons
Maybe I'll find another way
Find another day
With all the changing seasons of my life
Maybe I'll get it right next time
An now that you've been broken down
Got your head out of the clouds
You're back down on the ground
And you don't talk so loud
An you don't walk so proud
Any more, and what for?"

Much of the complaints and comments from fans about what should have happened and WHEN they should have happened all basicly boils down to either our own interest in seeing them succeed OR seeing the new-GNR fail.

Right after the VMA-performance, Axl basicly said: "...soon is not the word, we'll do some more recording and see how it goes..."

And while some fans sat and watched that performance thinking THIS IS IT! NOW, STRIKE WHILE THE IRON IS HOT!! It was obvious that Axl's timeframe and intentions was totally different.

If Axl was a "strike while the iron is hot"-kinda artist, there are SO many things that would have happened in the past 10 years. Not just thinking about the album...

The fact still is, 8 years later, GNR are still playing big venues all over the world!

Maybe it was just poor planning.  Just as Axl said that the 2002 tour was forced upon him, maybe this was too?  Why make that appearance if the album is nowhere near completed?  There's probably a reason why Dr. Dre hasn't performed songs from Detox at the VMA's the past few years.

I highly question if Better even existed that far back. I've always thought of that song being born just before Bucket exited. Bucket's contribution to the studio cut is small. It's almost all a Robin song.

They could've done Chinese Democracy. I can understand why Axl felt Madagascar was necessary based on the lyrics alone.

To me, you should've performed two songs, in full, no medley. One old, one new. Opening with Jungle was a smart move.

But there's only two CD songs I can think of that would catch a casual audience, and that's CD & Better. Let's say Better isn't on the table, nor CD. The only two songs that leaves is TWAT and This I Love. TWAT sucks live, but is probably the best song on the album, which leaves This I Love.

Other than TWAT, it's the most "old" Guns N' Roses sounding song on the album.

Most likely, Axl was screwed either way. But I could've easily seen a performance of Jungle, then This I Love. It would've probably put them in the best light they would've possibly been able to achieve.

Axl's playing big venues all over the world. GN'R hasn't played since July 17th, 1993.

I thought Madagascar sounded great. I actually thought it was the old songs that sounded weak. To me, Maddy was the best, despite being the CD song.

BUT, with that said, I think Maddy was the wrong choice from the CD vault to perform live. If Better didn't exist, it should've been CD or This I Love.
