Those mogg files showed me just how amazing CD would've been if Axl had done a straight up album without all of the layers.
That being said.. almost 2 years later and i think half of the album is really good rest is MEH..
it isn't the masterpiece or anywhere near the greatest GNR album of all time.
Take Catcher for instance... the intro and guitar solos are terrible and ruin what is my favorite song when i turn all that stuff off on the moggs.

I had a feeling you'd say that. That's not really half assing it though is it? I take half assing it to mean that he's out there going through the motions and not really trying. I certainly don't think that's the case. I think he's having fun out there and playing the solos as best he can. If you don't like the quality of his playing that's one thing, but I wouldn't call that half assing it.

The album'™s slow production is significant insofar as copyright infringement law is concerned. Cogill faced a statutory maximum of five years in prison under the original felony charge for which he was arrested, but that would have required prosecutors to prove that he had distributed pre-release, commercial material over the internet.
With the album in production for a decade and a half, the government might have had a hard time convincing a jury that it was on track for commercial distribution. The charges were subsequently reduced to a one-year maximum, misdemeanor copyright-infringement charge, which did not require proof that Chinese Democracy was going to be released.
'That was one of our positions that there was never any indication it was coming out anytime soon, said Cogill'™s attorney, David Kaloyanides, in a Wednesday telephone interview.
Cogill wondered aloud: 'How could they prove it was for commercial release when it was lying around for 15 years?
I said this EXACT same thing when this bullshit first started and some forum junkies wanted to burn me at the stake and said I didn't know shit about copyright infringement(which is laughable).
I still think he was a moron for not going to trial. A judge would have laughed this out of court. The case would have been dropped anyways because he could have easily called members of the band to testify and repeat the crap they said on the forums about them being "ancient demos" not worthy of release.
Dizzy, Bumblefoot, Fortus,etc. really dodged a bullet on this.
Til the day I die I will believe that Better could've been the biggest hit in the history of GN'R if it were mixed right and (more importantly) marketed correctly in this day & age.
I think that's going a bit too far, but I do agree that the initial leak in 2006 of Better was the best thing he had on his table and the only song on the album that MIGHT have been his 'Vertigo'. Then to the surprise of no one, he/they ruined it immediately.

It's not the songs that are bad (well - a couple are), it's the way they are recorded/mixed on the album. I can't judge the songs on their own merits because the quality of the mix/finished product is so bad. They might be the greatest songs ever, but there's no way to tell with all of the garbage going on.
Agreed 10000000000000%. Said from the moment I heard the polished album that its probably the worst production/mix of an album I have ever heard in my life. Certain songs(Better the most notable example) are literally vomit inducing. How this so called "perfectionist" gave the green light for that shit is mind boggling. I think the way it was handled just proved he didn't give a shit anymore and just wanted the monkey off his back and I don't blame him. Just wish he was a bit more concerned with quality control.
To this day(and however long I live) I will always fall out of my chair laughing at those who say its the greatest produced album in history. All that statement proves is that they haven't listened to very many albums and probably reside in a basement somewhere with Axl pics on their wall like a 12 year old girl.
Mommy should buy them a few more albums.

Yeah the intro is godawful and Tommy's work on that would have been better suited for a new tune. It sounds pasted in for shits and giggles anyways.
Yes the solos blow walrus dick. They are too high in the mix and it makes the song unlistenable.
I actually just turned it on and no way in hell am I gonna get through the whole thing. I wish it had been left off the album.
even the demos have too much shit going on.
I know I've said this a million times, but those aren't demos. Yeah we call them demos because its what we heard before the actual release. However, they aren't demos. They are way too advanced to be referred to as that. They were one mix/mastering session away from being wrapped in cellophane.

yeah that 06 Better was pretty awesome will always hate the intro Finck's guitar sounds like a dentist drilling teeth and Axl's poppy vocal isn't my favorite but when that shit kicked in, it was head banging kick ass fucking awesome.
Then we get CD and the guitars are weak as shit sounding and we get Pitman's whatever the fuck.
