I remember that song being on non-stop back then, but that's pretty remarkable to have sold that many based off one song.

There are some soundtracks that are like that. There was a shitty Eddie Murphy movie called "Boomerang" and the soundtrack was ENORMOUS in the early 90s only because it was the first album you could get "End Of The Road" by Boyz II Men on.
Nowadays the album wouldn't even chart but the one song everyone wanted would be downloaded (no doubt illegally) by millions of folk
