Haven't you got most of soundgardens rare cuts? Ever heard of Black Rain?
Don't have it. Never heard of it either. I don't even think Thayil mentioned it when discussing the box set.
They're not gonna use a track fans have been sitting on for years. The fact its an unknown song is its selling point. If they were gonna go the familiar route, a hit would have been used instead.

I've never heard of it either. Soundgarden have a lot of songs written that they've never used for anything. That's why a box set would be incredible for them to release.
I love most of their unused cuts that we currently have. To think that there's much more sitting in a vault somewhere pisses me off. I'm glad one is finally getting released.
And with that live version of Spoonman they released, a live album would be a nice touch.
And with them filming the Seattle show this year, a live DVD would be wonderful.
Re: New Soundgarden Pics
Thayil last year discussing the unreleased songs on a possible box set...
What are some titles of these unreleased tracks?
"Dirty Candy," "Ocean Fronts," "Open Up," "Summation" that was a pretty heavy song, in 5/4 time. "Ocean Fronts" is a little bit more of a trippy, arpeggiated song. A song called "Beast," which is going to sound exactly like the title. "Beast" and "Summation" were really strong songs live from the mid-late '80s. I cannot believe those two songs have never been released. "No Shame" is another title. There's enough stuff out there to fill up three or four albums. There's enough original stuff that's been released but hasn't been compiled, B sides to make an album. There's enough covers to make an album. There's enough remixes that Moby, Steve Fisk and Bill Rieflin did, that could constitute a pretty interesting EP. There's enough unreleased stuff to make an album. It's just getting the business and creative machine on the same page.

While some bands tour and record far past this age, you're walking on thin ice once the 50 mark rolls around. I'm sure someone will bring up the Stones and say Axl has another twenty years, but the Stones got their second wind and became the world's biggest band right before they hit 50 with Steel Wheels.
I still think there's enough good ideas left in them, that Axl, Izzy, Slash & Duff could put together a new album on the level of AFD and UYI I & II. As for relevance, who knows.
Despite the remaining the popularity of Guns N' Roses, one thing that will benefit Soundgarden over GN'R is that Cornell stayed busy as hell, and Audioslave was quite popular. Cornell's type of music is still on the radio today. Hell, 90% of the streamlined rock artists out there today cite either Alice In Chains or Soundgarden or BOTH as primary influences.
That'll give them a huge advantage imo. It'll be like them coming back and going "hey kids, this is how you do it RIGHT"
Kind of like the Stones, Queen & Aerosmith in the late 80's/early 90's walking into a sea of new bands all influenced by them, and suddenly the kids go "wow, I gotta go back and check out this band past just a Greatest Hits set".
I think the reason it didn't work for AIC is by the time they attempted their comeback, Layne Staley was dead.

I agree and as much as we all pick on stuff, i think the solo material demonstrates this. Chinese is a mix of things and styles, but it's still got Axl's genius stamped all over it....where else will you get the IRS scream, the high parts in twat, the lyrics to catcher, love CD or hate it, the boy still has talent. Likewise....Slash's solo efforts and VR/Snakepit......the guy still puts out killer riffs and emotive lead lines.....and he seems to be ripping it up better than ever.
I have no doubt that GNR, if they could agree on stuff and didn't hate one another, could put out an album on par with their past works, and this will sound insane, but perhaps almost better. As musically slash plays better than before, but not with anyone of the rest of the tallent of GNR. And Axl's vocal parts are more challanging than his old ones, but there's no slash etc etc. If you combined the best of all their independant efforts, holy fuck it would have made some killer tracks.
Sadly though...i think we're dreaming....just don't think Axl wants it to happen.

I havn't followed the public responce to AIC. Is it not working out in the press etc? I personally really enjoy about 3 or 4 tracks from their new album, sounds killer to me....i play the shit out of them!
Re: New Soundgarden Pics
Black Gives Way To Blue was great. Hell, I thought it was better than Tripod. Your Decision spent numerous weeks at #1 on the rock charts. Check My Brain & A Looking In View were also modest hits on rock radio.
It just hasn't resulted in album sales. Plus the constant battle still of "it's not really AIC, it's a Jerry Cantrell solo album"
Well if that's true, then Layne Staley was a session vocalist, because Jerry wrote most of AIC's stuff from day one.
As for Axl, a new "old" GN'R album will happen if the price is right. Alot of people say, "well I don't want them to get back together like that", well that's the only way it's gonna happen. But I don't think it's as negative a theory as people get.
Do you REALLY think Soundgarden reuniting is just because they're all really groovy with each other? No, there's money on the table. Duh.
Axl & Slash have their issues, but for the right price, old GN'R would be back in place, with an album to boot, within the year. I truely feel Axl's past his "I gotta get the fuck outta here" attitude that dominated most of the 90s & 2000s. I think he's ready to kick ass again.

I'm not so sure in the case of GNR though. I mean adler says live nation offered them $150 million or whatever it was. Don't get me wrong, Axl's always been the one in the group with the corporate kind of sensibility, antics aside, but that's how he ended up with the brand name, that's why he gets pissy about what people say about him. Whereas while slash is a PR god, I think pretty much his motivation is more about having fun and playing some rock, while if you remember that rant where Axl goes on about making a future for yourself so you don't end up getting screwed for your pension etc. Anyway so i'm not saying Axl wouldn't be interested in gettting paid right. But I also think if it was just cash it would have happened already. And his public comments are agressive and hostile and sound like a person with an emotional issue against slash. Right or wrongly I wouldn't know. But he sounds like a guy who genuinely doesn't like slash anymore. If that was a view that was changable for dollars....I think someone would have made it happen by now, and both Axl and Slash could have worked together to con the backers into a huge payday for everyone. I dunno i think it's personal. I think a conversation that resulted in a real meeting of the minds between them, and maybe a few appologies each way, and some recgonising of each others uniqueness would go a hell of a lot further to getting a new 'classic guns' album than say $500 million dollars would. Just my opinion.
Re: New Soundgarden Pics
I wouldn't trust Adler on quoting numbers. I don't think Adler is in the know at all, and probably got that from someone on the side.
I don't think the time was right in the past, as it is now either. VR was still heavily active, CD was still unreleased, Axl still had something to prove.
I have to say, as long as Axl can do ticket sales internationally with the new band the way it's been, I don't know if he'll ever be enticed to do it.
But something tells me that finishing strong, is something that's important to him. Money, contract stipulations, number of shows, promo, whatever those details are, just haven't been right in the past.
I personally have always thought it would've happened by now if Slash & co. were willing to be contract players for Axl's business venture, which is probably something they're not down with. So in Axl's eyes, he sees it as "I offered, THEY turned it down". Not that "I made an unreasonable offer that no stupid bastard in the history of music or business would agree to, intentionally". Which is probably how Slash sees it.
I've always thought Axl will reunite Guns, take the payday, they'll do a reunion, cut an all-new album together, go 'round the world, and then Axl will vanish again - for good.
Just a gut feeling.
