They were doing a photo shoot for Spin.  Not much in the way of news but it's cool to see them all together.

Definitely looking forward to the Spin article. If these guys have any plans other than a few shows, we'll find out in this article.

They have really ran in place since the announcement so I'm not really expecting much to come of this anymore. We're probably gonna get a very limited tour and hopefully at least that box set Thayil has mentioned before. A new album is nothing but a pipe dream. These guys have always been big on the legacy of the band, and a new album in the 21st century could taint that and I doubt they bother risking it. I have no doubts whatsoever that they can record something worth listening to, but I don't see it happening.

This should have happened in 2001 instead of Audioslave. The possibilities would have been endless. In 2010, not the case.

I dunno, Cornell's always been active in recording new material. His solo careeer floundered (twice), so I wouldn't see him choosing to return over SG.  I'd expect an album in 2011. Wouldn't surprise me.

This is also the way I look at it as well.  Carry On and Scream certainly didn't go over too well.

Cornell has a two options.  He can keep going about the solo route and play shows of past hits with plenty of covers thrown in and possibly release a solo album every now and again.

Or he, and the rest of Soundgarden, can get in the studio and start writing new material and put out another record.  With the success of Pearl Jam and AIC there's really no reason these guys wouldn't find success as well.  I know Chris has talked about their history being the perfect legacy to leave behind, but the decision one way or the other needs to be made soon or it'll be made for them.  They aren't exactly spring chickens anymore.  Just look at Ben in those photos.

Well it looks like Soundgarden is releasing a new song on Guitar Hero.

"The biggest release comes from recently reformed rock stars Soundgarden, who will debut their unreleased song "Black Rain" exclusively in Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock. This will be the first track the band has released together since its breakup in 1997. Soundgarden will feature alongside previously announced  artists, such as Jane's Addiction, A Perfect Circle, Black Sabbath, and Megadeth. "

No shit. The clock is running down fast for GN'R... in a real 24-fashion.

They don't have much time left.

This is probably the first in a series of steps leading to that box set.

Ben looks terrible. Hell, even Cornell is starting to show some wear and tear.

I'm not doubting potential success. The rock world sucks and has sucked for quite a long time. They could probably shit out a gold record right now. The issue becomes how well does the material stack up to the rest of their discography. If they think that a proper follow up to Down on the Upside can be recorded 14-15 years after the fact, be my guest. If they aren't up to the task or are only able to churn out an average album with one really strong single to sell it, don't even bother. We know they were capable of writing mind blowing shit in their 20s and 30s, but can they do that as they approach 50? Hell, Ben and Kim have been out of the game so long I'm surprised they even remember how to play. 16

I'll take the box set with a disc of unreleased tracks over these guys looking for relevancy at 50.

Their window is very small and it shrinks by the day. Releasing a shitty Cornell solo album is much different than releasing a shitty Soundgarden album.

It wont be long until we know the answer.

While some bands tour and record far past this age, you're walking on thin ice once the 50 mark rolls around. I'm sure someone will bring up the Stones and say Axl has another twenty years, but the Stones got their second wind and became the world's biggest band right before they hit 50 with Steel Wheels.
