Re: Slash makes a small comment on Chinese Democracy
Fact, in 2002 I saw GNR play the Palace in Detroit, 6,600 fans where there at the 20,000 seat arena.
Fact, in 2005 I saw VR play the Palace in Detroit, 10,000+ fans
Guys, I don't want to get into a pissing contest either, Axl is on a legacy that Slash helped build, and guess what, SLASH TOO STILL EARNS MONEY OFF THE GNR NAME, PLUS SLASH, PLUS MARSHALL, PLUS GIBSON, PLUS GUITAR HERO 3, PLUS HIS BOOK, PLUS VR. Slash is playing small gigs and that is what he likes to play. Slash self funded his own album, and probably has already made a killing off the album.
Axlin08, Slash played on Rhianna's new album, she is one of the biggest artists around.
Take out Sweet Child O'mine, PC, and WTTJ (all as famous, if not more, for the guitar than Axl's voice or lyrics) and GNR never makes it to even record UYI... I will say this, had Slash never been in GNR, Axl wouldn't have a pot to piss in. He owes a lot of his legacy to that guy, especially the SCOM riff he brilliantly just "made up". Same goes for Estranged and NR...

My guess is Axl and Izzy could have found another really good blues guitarist and still wrote some damn good songs.
You give Slash too much credit. Izzy was a huge writing force in GNR.

yes, but the biggest songs has the signature Slash riff's. And Slash isn't a "pure blues" player like Eric Clapton or something, he is a blues based, hard rock player. Either way, the Intro to Sweet Child, GNR's biggest hit was Slash. The solos in NR were Slash. I give up, you guys win.
Re: Slash makes a small comment on Chinese Democracy
i'm with ya smokin....and its not that i'm downplaying anyone elses contributions to the orig gnr....but slash was a major factor in their success for sure, to claim otherwise is just plain ridiculous
and sure Slash uses his past GnR successes to promote himself...why shouldnt he?
fact is that niether guy has matched his previous successes...i'm not even sure what you guys are arguing about

Re: Slash makes a small comment on Chinese Democracy
It's fascinating how some of you wanna rewrite GN'R's history. Anyone who says that Slash was just a 'blues player' and Axl and Izzy could have had another one and achieved the same success is plain deaf or lying or up in Axl's ass and can't see the reality. Sorry, it's harsh, but it's the truth. Not my opinion, it's the truth.
Slash wrote all the famous and important guitars in GN'R - who the fuck cares about Think About You and 14 Years? Slash is one of the most respected guitar players EVER. He's in the Hendrix-Page-Clapton-Van Halen league, yet some 'GN'R fans' can't stop downplaying his importance, just because Axl Rose hates him. Ridiculous. Without Slash, Axl and Izzy would have been Rapidfire 2. Pure crap.
Re: Slash makes a small comment on Chinese Democracy
What any of this has to do with POST-1991 i'm not sure.
I never denied the legendary stuff Slash brought to the table for Guns. Slash doesn't NEED to be back in GN'R, but I have no doubt he desperately WANTS to be back in Guns.
Axl actually NEEDS Guns. Otherwise he wouldn't have secured the name all those years ago.

Of course Slash was a huge force in GNR. Without him they wouldn't have been as big as they did get.
I think we both agree that these two should be working together again.
But I only think that one of them wants to be right now...
Re: Slash makes a small comment on Chinese Democracy
Whatever about the Axl vs. Slash thing...But something I've never seen posted on these boards is how much did Slash get for the GuitarHero gig? Being the star of the first ever billion$ video game is nothing to sneeze at. Besides the upfront fee, I wonder if he had a moviestar contract where he got %'s at the backend? Could explain why he suddenly felt like ditching moody frontmen & going solo.

Re: Slash makes a small comment on Chinese Democracy
I just don't get folks lining up to have a pissing competition on behalf of each man. Both occupy a place in rock legend, both men are still in huge demand and are still doing nicely from their unique contribution to rock music history and culture twenty years ago. Both men reek of wasted opportunities when stacked against peers like Bono & the Edge, Page & Plant etc..
I don't think Slash wants to play with Axl in the way that some of you Axl blow-hards are insinuating. I doubt Slash lies awake at night wishing Axl would call. That'™s Stephen and Matt'™s job. Duff and Slash have left the door open but on very strict terms (some of them even for our benefit). Like any ordinary human being, the thoughts of getting up to $20MIL for just standing on stage with your old sparring partner, cranking out the hits to a delirious crowd for a few hours a year must be a VERY attractive offer. Hell, I'™m a married man and I'™d lick the sweat off Axl'™s balls for $20M, never mind stand on one side of a stage and play my guitar with him!!
It must not be forgotten that Weiland alluded to both sides being at some stage willing to get back out there for big bucks; so both men must have '˜wanted'™ a reunion on some level, even if it was only for the green. I would think Weiland was better placed than any of us to speak about the realities that have gone on behind the scenes and away from the terribly sketchy and often contradictory recollections of Slash or the hopelessly skewed version of the truth offered in the Del interviews.
While we have all sat around here playing the puritant fan, Slash has re-invented himself. Sure, I think the top hat and leather gloves look silly now, but he is a visual as well as an audio brand now. He is no different than Laura Croft to some of the kids out there. Instead of swinging on vines in shorts on their computer screens, he slays them in guitar duels and is known as the cat in the top hat and shades. He has become the cartoon character Axl branded him as originally but you know what? It pays the fucking bills, and then some.
Find me one other guitar player from the eighties who has done so well without his original iconic front man for 15 years. With no Guns N Roses name and no singing voice to communicate with, I think the fact that he is still so well respected and well known is a fucking triumph.
Stack him against Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai and CC DeVille and and any other 80's/90's guitar god and you get a fairer picture of the man. He's the last hero left.
Stack Axl against Bono, Springsteen, and any other vocalist of his stature back in the day and sadly the man comes up short.

Slash fucked up on the Guitar Hero thing BIG TIME in the sense of what he got paid for it. Either him (or his management) stupidly didn't negotiate some sort of ongoing percentage fee/royalty. Let me quote from the Classic Rock Slash edition:
"For me personally, when I signed up to do it, that particular game really took off" he explains. "The game wasn't as big before that. It was a little more under the radar when they called me up. And I did it for a pretty modest amount of money. There was no offer of a royalty or anything. Now after the fact, I'm like fuck....
