Re: Slash makes a small comment on Chinese Democracy
Axl has recognized Slash's ability in the past. Short of Axl being dead wrong on the UYI work of Slash, everything post-that Axl has said what alot of people have felt... Slash never really got back to 1991 form. And he hasn't.
Unlike Axl, which despite the stigma of CD, Axl was praised almost across the board with critics and fans alike on his traditional ballads, and many have felt from 2006-2010 that Axl vocally is Axl again. There's tons of frontmen that cannot captivate an audience at nearly 50, like Axl does.
Slash gets praise, but Slash seems to get more of that "what you used to be" praise which is entirely different. Come on, can you honestly say that any of Slash's post-91 material holds up to his live performance of Civil War? Or Nightrain? Not a chance.
But i've heard Axl belt some vocals (Better, This I Love) that are as much Axl as if he was doing November Rain at the VMA's in '92.
I would LOVE to see Axl & Slash back on stage one day doing the hits for old time sake. As for new material, i'm just not sure. Maybe if Izzy was writing all of it i'd feel a bit more comfortable.

Axl can still go platinum. Slash goes "Muir".
I'm sure Slash would love to be back in, and doing STADIUMS across the world, which right now, he is not.
IFOS, went platinum
Contraband, went platinum
Chinese Democracy in the US did not go Platinum
GNR Greatest Hits went 5 times platinum.
Slash debuted at #3
Contraband debuted at #1
CD debuted at #3
Axl has the GNR brand name behind him, and I don't see all this money you are talking about.
Slash has Guitar Hero, Ernie Ball, Gibson, Dunlop and Marshall giving him money as well... Who does Axl have? Slash is a session player to the stars, whose albums does Axl do work for, other than Bach?

Not even Velvet Revolver could match up to how GNR can tour, and they had both the GNR name and the STP name behind them to help pack places out. And the STP name does hold quite a bit of weight as well.

Axlin08, are you serious? You compare a singer to a guitar player, wtf, if Axl sings on IFOCS, Contraband or this last album on songs like Starlight, or Dr. Alibi, or We're All Gonna Die they would all be huge. Axl is an amazing singer! So compare him to other amazing Singers.. Sammy Hagar is old, a lot older than Axl and he still sounds great. Look at Ronnie James Dio, over 70, and can still hang. Don't forget Brian Johnson or Ozzy. Axl isn't the first and won't be the last. Put Slash in current GNR and This I Love would improve dramatically. Hell, on Sorry Bucket plays very Slashesque, and that is one of the best solos on the album.

Lets see how he tours in America, cause the last time around outside of huge cities was a fucking debacle averaging 4,900 peeps per venue.

Still better than 2000 capacity venues.
Re: Slash makes a small comment on Chinese Democracy
IFOS, went platinum
It was also released at a time when Guns N' Roses was on the backside of their height of popularity. Only two years prior, they wrapped the Use Your Illusion World Tour and released The Spaghetti Incident, only a year prior they released the Sympathy For The Devil cover for Interview With A Vampire, and at the time of IFOS Slash was still an active member in Guns N' Roses.
Contraband, went platinum
Contraband was promoted as a Supergroup album. Guns N' Pilots. Stone Temple Roses. All of the names were thrown out there. That's combining two fanbases, in order to get your album to go platinum. They also got the jump on Axl's delays of CD, by intentionally promoting as a GN'R album. Hell I remember the original news story on E! News was that Guns N' Roses was being reformed with a new lead singer. It eventually became Velvet Revolver. But this was the approach used.
Despite Slash not being a member for 8 years and Duff for 6, they leeched that GN'R name in order to promote that album. And that's fine. Axl's done the same with new Guns. But for as much as we can't give Axl the benefit of the doubt because he hides behind the GN'R brand name, we can't say Slash & Duff exactly made it on their own either. And they also had the STP name in their back pocket too with Weiland.
Comparing VR to GN'R is like comparing Damn Yankees to Styx.
Chinese Democracy in the US did not go Platinum
Yes it did.
GNR Greatest Hits went 5 times platinum.
Uhh, okay?
Slash debuted at #3
Contraband debuted at #1

Debuts mean virturally nothing. I don't remember who Slash's competition was with CB or Slash, but I do know Axl went head-to-head with STIFF competition. He dropped CD, in a BB-EXCLUSIVE, and was still able to go #3 up against Taylor Swift & Kanye West, who were the hottest acts on the planet at the time. Swift still is.
Axl has the GNR brand name behind him, and I don't see all this money you are talking about.
Axl doesn't need it. He has the GN'R brand name. It eclipses ANYTHING someone could throw at him. And of course, if all else fails, he has 'Axl Rose'. Unlike Slash, Axl doesn't want or need his name to be the "Coca-Cola" of rock in order to have backers. Slash works his ass off for the promo deals he gets. Axl sleeps in, gets offers, and still turns them down.
Slash has Guitar Hero, Ernie Ball, Gibson, Dunlop and Marshall giving him money as well... Who does Axl have? Slash is a session player to the stars, whose albums does Axl do work for, other than Bach?
Axl has Rock Band. Axl has the sole position as frontman of Guns N' Fuckin' Roses. What more does he need? Slash is a session player to who? Fergie? Ian Astbury? Myles Kennedy? A. Shadows?
Who gives a fuck when Axl is dining with Paul McCartney, talking to Elton John, playing tennis with Scarlette Johansson, and playing parties for Rosario Dawson, Michael J. Fox, Sean Penn, Donatella Versace, which include guests such as Penelope Cruz, Halle Berry, etc.
Are we really gonna get into this dick measuring contest? You absolutely SURE you want to do that?
Re: Slash makes a small comment on Chinese Democracy
Axlin08, you bring up some damn good points.
Axl to this day is still one of the most sought after singers. There aren't too many people who wouldn't jump at the chance to work with him. But he chooses to not over saturate our ears and eyes with his voice and his image.
Axl also doesn't have to stick with one image for people to recognize who he is. He came out with braids and huge jerseys and people still knew he was Axl Rose. Let's see Slash drop the top hat and shave his head and people are going to go "Who the fuck is that?!"
Slash chooses to throw his image around and shove it down everyone's throats. And still doesn't have the power Axl holds.
Re: Slash makes a small comment on Chinese Democracy
Axl's publishing rights alone plus the CD era of concert tours, festivals, even CD sales, far outstrip Slash's earnings. Hell, Axl's publishing rights got more money than Slash could have scrounged up on all his solo projects over the last 17 years.
If we are talking the ability to make money, right now, Axl still wins. It doesn't make him the more respectable or talented artist. It just makes him the smart one who ended up figuring out that the brand name was worth more than the public reputation. Sorry, it hurts, but Axl won on the business side.

NONE of those guys ever had the success that Axl had. Sure you could argue Hagar, but Hagar was a replacement player. He inherited what VH already had built. Axl was in GN'R from the ground floor - up. So he's an original. Dio was another one no one knew until he linked up with Sabbath. Another inherited fanbase. Brian Johnson has never sung, but screamed, and he's really good at it. He was ALSO ANOTHER nobody that inherited a fanbase from an already legendary band.
Ozzy has mumbled and used auto-tune for years, but if anyone Axl would be similar to it'd be Ozzy. Ozzy has great success despite not being with Sabbath, and pretty much proved HE IS BLACK SABBATH. The only difference is that Ozzy released more material, and Axl's only got one album to his name.

I can attest to being at one of the "club size in an arena" Guns N' Roses shows, but something tells me that Slash solo wouldn't have even been able to book that venue, let alone perform in it. Or any of the other ones.
