The release date is set. The buzz is growing. And now M.I.A. has chosen the lead single from her eagerly-awaited album.

The 'Paper Planes'  rapper, who recently returned to the U.S. after visa problems, has selected 'XXXO'  as the first single from her as-yet-untitled third album. The catchy electro-pop song will be available on iTunes May 11, Rap-Up.com has learned.

'I just feel like '˜XXXO'™'”it is what it is,'  she told Zane Lowe on BBC Radio 1. 'It'™s kinda [about] being disconnected in L.A. and not having cell phone service or just not being able to kinda leave there for 18 months.'

While she does not appear in her controversial video for 'Born Free,'  which has been banned from YouTube, she will soon go in front of the lens to shoot the visuals for 'XXXO'  with famed director Hype Williams.

M.I.A. had everyone looking up when a blimp flew overhead Jay-Z'™s set at Coachella to announce her June 29th album release date.

She has a history of testing the waters with a new track before the actual first single is released. When she had a massive buzz before the release of Arular, she released Galang before release, which eventually became its second single. In 2007, she leaked Bird Flu which kick started the hype for the album months before release. Boyz was its first single(bad mistake), and Bird Flu was never technically a single even though she released a video for it.

She's doing the same thing now, although having the track for sale on Itunes does give it the feel of an actual single. Guess she wants to make a little money on the pre album release leak this time.

Still blows me away that Kala only had three singles(Boyz, Jimmy, Paper Planes). For some reason she stopped and just rode the Paper Planes craze instead of releasing other songs after it like Bamboo Banga or World Town. Most of that album had single worthy songs.

At Treasure Island(right after Kala was released), the whole crowd was singing along to World Town. That should have gave her a clue to release it as it was a deep album cut.
