Godfather II deserves to win, no doubt, so it gets my vote.  Even though I prefer Empire Strikes Back.  I can't believe the love The Dark Knight has gotten around here.  I mean it was a good movie, but man.  I must've voted against it the last 4 rounds or so.  By far the worst film on the list, yet it's in the lead.  I don't get it.

Nah, Empire Strikes Back is far more a lesser film than TDK, and all the Star Wars films get too much love not only here, but everywhere.

The only true rival on that list right now is Godfather Part II.

Fight Club shouldn't have even made it out of Round 2. It's the "Wonka" of this tourney.

how do you figure? empire was landmark and 30 years later its still very much relevant to sci-fi culture and special effects creation in movies

the only reason why dark knight did as well as it did is cuz ledger died before the release

the bale batman's have been "just OK" at best. in 30 years nobody will give a shit and empire will still be classic

Bullshit. I can't believe people still hang on that. "It only did well because of Ledger's death"...

Funny, the Batman I know of has been around since the 1930's, and remained universally popular across the world. When was Star Wars written? The 70's?

The Dark Knight did well because Batman (the most popular superhero of all time) + The Joker (the most popular villian of all time) = Legendary Box Office Success.

TDK was an engrossing tragedy, and high drama. It was a great film by itself. If Nicholson had reprised The Joker, it would've done the same box office.

Star Wars might be a cultural landmark, and i'm not disagreeing with that. I wouldn't be dumb enough. Empire Strikes Back is one of the most highly regarded sequels. So is The Dark Knight.

People will remember TDK the same way the same way they remember Empire - as a whole. People won't discern Empire, they'll say "the Star Wars films". They won't say "The Dark Knight", they'll say "Batman".

I can't believe that you think nobody will give a shit about Batman in 30 years, considering that fact that people have given a shit about Batman, nearly 40 YEARS before Star Wars ever rolled along, and even in 2008, 70 years later, a Batman movie can do a billion dollars worldwide.

And you think it's because of Heath Ledger? If that's the case, why didn't Brokeback Mountain do that money? Why didn't The Patriot do that money? Why didn't A Knight's Tale do that money?

It's bigger than that. Batman + The Joker = that result. Those characters are still that popular. You can put anyone in them.

i'm not denying batmans popularity...but how many times has it been redone and reworked? how many batman fils are there with different actors? see batman way always reinvent itself, and when the next thing comes along then nobody will care about Bale/Ledger cuz there will be a new better version

Maybe you're right. Hopefully something will come along and crush TDK. It just makes the Batman franchise that much better.

But like Russ said, that will be a damn hard accomplishment to come across and surpass TDK. That'd be like someone thinking they could make a Star Wars film that would surpass Empire, or a Terminator film better than T2.

As for Ledger's death, if you say so. I know the media ran that quite a bit, but I don't think the guy was near as popular as people give him credit for. Heath Ledger was liked as an actor, but I don't think he has even a Mel Gibson type of status.

I don't see how Ledger's death could overshadow the legend of Batman. Ledger's a bit player, alive or dead. Before TDK people were saying no one would replace Nicholson, and Ledger did. It's not because of Ledger - it's The Joker.

Arguably, I would say ironically - Mark Hamill - is probably the most popular, and universally liked actor to ever portray The Joker.

Ledger's death certainly had some impact, but even greater was the way they promoted the movie. I know the film, in a competition like this, must stand alone from its marketers, but the small pieces they threw out with the Joker drove Batman fans absolutely insane. Few people expected him to do well, many said Nicholson would never be improved upon (laughable, in my opinion, but some people did think that) and in these tiny teasers you saw what this Joker was. First the face with the scars and the messy, scary make-up. Then the laugh. Then a few lines. Each was so perfect and built anticipation so greatly that you could just feel it was going to be the performance of the year. Then he died, and you realized you were going to see something legendary on opening night.

TDK's midnight premiere is both the most excited I've ever been going in to a theatre and the most excited I've ever been leaving one after the movie. Combine Ledger's and Nolan's Joker with Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, and Aaron Eckhart (who in my opinion stole the movie) and how can you suggest it's not got all the ingredients of a classic?

If you think it was a let down, or that it was clumsily edited, that's fine - but when you look at all the elements involved, and the anti-CGI stance they took while filming, you'd expect something great. In a world of unexpected surprises and let-downs, when you expect something great and then get it, it's remarkable. For a long, long time.
