I agree. Out of all the major film icons that have emerged since the 80s, he is the only one that can truly bury himself in the character.

He isn't Brad Pitt playing Brad Pitt.

Gotta disagree with that one. He's better than the likes of Clooney and whatnot, but he's not a better character actor than the likes of DDL or Penn.

Yeah, only the best actor on the planet dude. Brad Pitt's never done anything as powerful as DDL's work in My Left Foot or There Will Be Blood.

I don't think Pitt fits the role of the character.  The Blomkvist charachter is in his mid to late 40s and is a loner.  Pitt despite being 46 or 47 looks at least ten years younger.  The character in the book isn't that attractive and is a little heavy set (not fat). Blomkvist is also somewhat of a cynical grump in the book.  Russell Crowe or Liam Niasson would be better suited.  I think Pitt is too good looking and his looks work against him in this case.

Daniel Day Lewis does films once every few years now.  I think he spends time in Italy making shoes.  Anyway, he was great in Gangs of New York and another underrated Scorcese film "The Age of Innocence" with Winona Ryder and Michelle Pfiefer.

Lewis is great, no doubts there. His performance in There Will Be Blood is mind blowing and probably one of the greatest performances of the past ten years.

Sean Penn is hit or miss. Sometimes he rises to the occasion, sometimes he doesn't.

Pitt was on fire in the mid 90s. From Kalifornia to Legends of the Fall to Se7en to 12 Monkeys to Seven Years in Tibet to Fight Club is very impressive and most actors couldn't have pulled off all those roles realistically.

We can debate who is better, but I think we can all agree that he is loaded with talent and doesn't just play it safe by playing himself like most A list actors do.

He was great in Legends of the Fall.  I always forget about that film for some reason.  I got some great laughs out of Burn after Reading.  The only film I didn't like was Oceans 12 but almost everyone sucked in that film so its not really his fault.
