Larry Getlen of the New York Post recently conducted an interview with legendary guitarist Slash (VELVET REVOLVER, GUNS N' ROSES). An excerpt from the chat follows below.
New York Post: When Axl [Rose] finally released "Chinese Democracy" in 2008, What did you think?
Slash: It was the perfect Axl record '” exactly what I would have expected from the final years of us working together, and seeing where he was headed musically. It's very heavy; sort of a dark, depressing record. He's fucking phenomenal.
New York Post: But the two of you haven't spoken in years. Would you be open to speaking again?
Slash: I'm more standoffish because I know how vehemently he hates me. So that sort of makes me doubt it. But if we ran into each other and all that animosity were to pass for a second, then I'm sure we could have an interesting conversation.
New York Post: Axl Rose and Scott Weiland are great vocalists, but not so stable. Is that why you worked with so many guests on your new record?
Slash: Now you're getting into the deeper psychological aspect of it, which I hadn't really taken into consideration. Maybe a couple of hours on the couch might pull that one out! I think the whole thing was just inspired by great singers that I wanted to work with. I didn't think about other aspects of it. But the one cool thing that did come out of this was that it gave me a whole new respect for singers, and changed my attitude toward them given the last couple of guys that I've worked with. These people were all amazingly gracious and professional. I've done so much session work where I write or play with somebody, and it's an empty feeling when you're done because they take off with the material '” it's like being a surrogate. So this time, I had all these people play on my record.

I really wish I knew why Axl hates him. Not any axlite or slashite bullshit of why one is an asshole and the other is a victim. The real reason of what went down.
Cause he was too good and left him. Axl can't forgive that.

Yeah, that falls into the fanboy bullshit category...
You know, with such a tremendous, venomous hate Axl feels towards Slash, either Slash had to do something baaaad, or Axl is a bat shit crazy hater. This time one of them is a bad boy, for sure. It's not a tiny misunderstanding that escalated, otherwise Axl wouldn't be so rude after 15 years.
Anyway, even if Slash did anything but killing his loved ones, Axl shouldn't be this vindictive.

Who knows, I don't think there is much secret that went on. I suspect it's something like Axl has ways that are hard to deal with, eg late starts, Slash has ways that are hard to deal with, eg Drug abuse. Slash felt axl was disrespecting him by wanting to work with huge and in different directions and so started doing his own thing, which Axl maybe saw as a betrayal of it's own, and at some point both of them are hurt. But as fans we can't know...but I don't think there's a secret "slash fucked Axl's girl" story or anything like that.
I like that Slash calls Axl phenomenal and basicly praises Chinese Democracy here.
I'd like to see even if no reuinion ever happens, both of them happy to know someone that played a big part in the other's life, and both recgonising each other as unsually talented, even in the context of prefering not to work together again.

From what I remember of a Slash/Howard Stern interview from a loooong time ago, Slash said something that they both thought that "they" were GNR and they both had people (hangers on) egging them both on. I'm pretty sure that a big part of that from Slash's side was his girlfriend, if I remember right. I remember that part because Howard asked it was the same chick that was with Slash in Private Parts. And also Matt talking about how he could understand Axl feeling ostracized back during the UYI era because of how tight Duff, Matt and Slash were and they basically became their own clique.
I don't think it was one thing.

If I didn't know any better I'd say there's one vocalist Slash wants to work with more than anyone else now.
Guess he heard his own record.
Of cousre Slash would love to work with Axl again... Who wouldn't?
